ANGRY WARREN TAXPAYERS SUE TRUSTftBOARD Demand $16,000 for Alleged Illegal Transactions • During Term. Because Warren township taxpayers believe “additional appropriations'' were made illegally, they sued William H. Cooper, former trustee, and his advisory board for $12,000, plus $4,000 attorney fees, Wednesday in superior court. Complaint was brought by Daniel Michael, Harry A. Huesing, Jchn S. Newhouse and John W. Behrman. The same plaintiffs filed a suit against Cooper last week to collect $516 which they charge was paid illegally to an unlicensed school teacher. The present suit sets forth that Cooper called a meeting of his board Nov. 6, 1930. after the new Democratic board had been elected and qualified for office. Cooper’s board included Walter E. Shearer, William S. Frye, and F. William Hogle. The advisory board authorized an appropriation of $8,500 without advertising, the suit contends. Cooper spent $7,921.26 of this amount prior to leaving office Jan. 1, plaintiffs aver.' Citizens of Warren township, aroused by state board of accounts disclosures concerning Cooper’s administration of school funds, are seeking means of keeping their 1931 tax rate at a minimum. The new advisory board will soon sell a $50,000 bond issue to pay off debts left by Cooper, according to Charles M. Walker, present Democratic trustee. Cooper, a Republican, charged today that the suit is a political move. “I acted within the law," he stated.

NEW ROHMER STORY HAS BEEN BOOKED “Daughter of Fu Manchu” Will Reach Circle Screen Under the Title of “Daughter of the Dragon.’' SAX ROHMER'S mystery thriller, “Daughter of Fu Manchu,” under the screen title of “Daughter of the Dragon," will reflect its myriad thrills and chills on the Circle theater screen during the week starting Friday. Warner Oland, Anna May Wong, Sessue Hayakawa, Bramwell Fletcher and Frances Dade are among the interpreting cast of this picture. Warner Oland achieved fame as a portrayer of oriental roles, by having recognition thrust upon him. Now he assumes these roles because he prefers them, and the latest sample of Oland as a mandarin, occurs in “Daughters of the Dragon.” |
It is Paramount’s fllmization of a new Fu Manchu adventure by the author of “The Mysterious Dr. Fu Manchu” and “The Return of Fu Manchu,” in which Oland won suc- | cess with his portrayal of the title roles. Twelve years ago, Oland was cast as a South American in “Patria,” a serial thriller with Irene Castle and Milton Sills. The chief villain role was that of an oriental. At the end of a day’s work, it was decided that the ac.tor playing the oriental part did not look the part and Oland was asked to shift to the other role. Since that time, he has had numerous oriental roles and has become established as one of the leading actors of that type, although by birth, he is Swedish. In the latest of Rohmer’s stories to reach the talking screen, Oland scores again in his enduring plan of revenge, but is brought down before his debt of honor is entirely canceled; a beautiful daughter endeavoring to erase the final blot on the family escutcheon. Direction of “Daughter of the “Dragon” is credited to Lloyd Corrigan, who also shares credit for the adaptation with Monte M. Katterjohn. Added entertainment on the SISTER ATTACKS WILL Received Only SSO From $250,000 Estate of Brother. By Times Special NEW ALBANY, Ind., Sept. 3.—A suit seeking to break the will of Dr. John Hazelwood, an oculist, who died Aug. 26, has been filed in Floyd circuit court here by his sister, Mrs. Blanch Woodward, who received a bequest of only SSO from an estate valued at $250,000. Among defendants are two brothers of Mrs. Wodward. She alleges that her brother was of unsound mind when the will was made.
