BLACK PHANTOM OF OLD KILLER DAYS IS DEAD Famous Western Bad Man, Stage Coach Robber, Passes in Prison. Ji’j United Prc*n CANON CITY, Colo., Sept. 2. The Black Phantom, stage coach robber, road agent and killer, one of the last bad men of the old west, is dead. The Black Phantom was Allen H. Downen, 32. The white-haired old man, whose benevolent attitude and Jovial spirit belied his past, died at the Colorado state penitentiary, where he had been since 1896. He was the oldest convict, both in years and in time served. The wooden box was ready for his burial today on Goat Hill, not far from graves of leaders in the bloody prison riot of 1929. Saw First Plane in ’29 It was during the riot that Oownen saw his first airplane when it flew over the prison. He had seen automombiles pass. Other phases of the modern world were a closed book to him for he lived in memories of two-gun road agent days when lynch law ruled the west. At 24, Downen held up a stage coach, his first essay in crime. Five years later, he stepped from the roadside near San Joe, Cal., robbed a Wells-Fargo stage and escaped into the hills. A posse caught him and he was sentenced to twenty years in San Quentin penitentiary. Two years later he escaped. A spectacular gun battle ended in recapture. Downen served ten years ol his sentence. Free again and six-shooter in hand, he held up, robbed and killed a man and woman. Again he went to San Quentin, to remain until 1892. Rode Into Rockies Known throughout the west by that time as the Black Phantom, the bad man rode eastward into the Rockies. Vigilantes with a rope chased him out of Montana. Daring holdups made his name an epithet in Cheyenne, Wyo. Soon the golden road that leads from Denver to the mountains was terrorized by a farm hand who was road agent by night. The Black Phantom was busy again. Scores of travelers “stood and delivered” at pistol point. Joel Ashworth, a salesman, resisted and paid with his life. One night Downen held up one of his own relatives. His mask slipped and the Black Phantom was phantom no longer. A posse captured him and he was sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of Ashworth.
