SHIPPERS FIGHT RAILRATE HIKE Argue Case at Commission Hearing in Chicago. By United Press CHICAGO, Aug. 31.—A maze of evidence which middle-western shipping interests hoped would defeat the petition of railroad exercutives for a 15 per cent horizontal increase in freight rates was prepared for submission today at the opening of the interstate commerce commission’s final hearing on the petition. Representatives of fourteen western state commerce commissions, as well as attorneys and officials of agricultural associations and large industries, planned to appear befwre the commissioners. The hearing is the last of a series of eleven held throughout the country since the railroads presented their arguments in Washington previous to July 15. Evidence prepared for submission will be in support of arguments that the proposed increase will cost farmers $102,000,000 annually and millions of dollars to other industries. Railroad executives have announced the proposed rates would mean an increased revenue amounting to approximately $400,000,000.
