BY ELMER C WALZER United Pres* Financial Editor NEW YORK, Aug. 21.—A deluge of selling brought stock market prices down 1 to 10 points in the last half-hour of trading today. A slight recovery followed near the close. Sales in the last fifty minutes amounted to 600,000 shares, against 200,000 in the corresponding period Thursday. This spurt of activity brought the day’s total to 1,300,000 shares, against 1,100,000 Thursday. The Dow-Jones averages (preliminary calculation) were: Industrial 138.64, off 3.29; railroad 69.02, off 1.02, and utility 56.95, off 1.26, all new lows since Aug. 10. Dumping of thousands of shares of Chrysler, Case, General Motors and United Corporation touched off the decline, which was carried further by bearish operations. Tickers Behind Market Trading picked up in volume until the high speed tickers were running behind the market. Volume slowed up near the close on the mild recovery. The immediate cause of the sudden turn was fear the English government- would fall in the process of budget balancing. This brought a weak close in the London market. Predictions of lower automobile company business in the third quarter set off the selling in the motor shares.

BREAK IN CORN GARRIES GRAIN FUTURES DOWN September Delivery Makes New Season's Low at Close. BY HAROLD E. RAIXVILLE United Press Staff Correspondent CHICAGO, Aug. 21.—Heavy liquidation in September corn toward the close on the Board of Trade today broke that delivery to anew low for the season and carried the other deliveries off with it, as well as causing wheat to react from its firm position. The finish was very tame after the early show of strength and all grains were lower, although having resisted pressure most of the day with success. Oats followed the major grains slowly in a dull session. Close Is Lower At the close wheat was % to •% cent lower; com was % to cent off, and oats were Vs cent lower to 5 s cent higher. Provisions were easy. Liverpool failed to hold the top prices closing unchanged to % cent higher. The advance slowed the demand. The proposed exchange of Brazilian coffee for farm board wheat would aid in taking the burden of large wheat supplies off the market. There was considerable spreading between September and May early. Cash prices were unchanged to % cent higher. Receipts were 224 cars. Cash Corn Drops Corn advanced with wheat at the start and likewise reacted with that grain, holding % cent to % cent higher at mid-session. September made a good advance early on the large cash sales, but later eased. It was reported that several leading local industries were out of the cash market and this was depressing. Cash prices were % cent to 1 cent lower. Receipts were 95 cars. Oats gained fractionally, with the other grains, and held % cent to % cent up at mid-morning. Trade was at a low rate of activity, with news lacking. Cash prices were unchanged. Receipts were 66 cars. Chicago Grain Range WHEAT- - AUK ' 21 ~ Prev o . 2H en ' High. Low. Close, close.
