CAPITAL STIRRED DY 'BREAK' IN UTILITY LEAGUE # Jnsull, Morgan Flare Hinted Cause for Withdrawal of Big Company. icnppt - Hatcard b’ctcipoptr Alliance WASHINGTON, Aug. 21.—Two of the largest utility companies In the country have withdrawn from membership in the National Electric Light Association, It was learned today. This break, though its cause is not known, is arousing considerable Interest here. The two companies are United Gas Improvement Company and Philadelphia Electric Company, both important subsidiaries of United Corporation, the country’s largest holding company, controlled by Morgan interests. National Electric Light Association is the trade organization formed "for educational purposes" which played the leading part in the federal trade commission’s investigation of utitlity company propaganda. It formed the various branches throughout the country which discovered that teachers belonged to "the starveling professions,” and deserved remnuerative employment in utility plants during vacation time; that scrutinized textbooks used in the schools and distributed there pamphlets of its own preparing; that used numerous devices for securing newspaper publicity, and that prepared speakers to address church groups, women’s clubs, Boy Scout chapters and various other organizations on the subject of utilities. .i The asso ci a tion’s 1 principal strength has been in its thorough organization of the utility industry. In 1928 it had a membership of forty-eight holding comiltnies, 1,593 individual operating confcar.ies and 17 331 employes of utilitylcompanies. United Gas Improvement and Philadelphia Electric have not only ■withdrawn their corporate memberships, but have ordered ell their affiliated companies and their employes to withdraw'. If Electric Bond and Share, with all its many subsidiaries, should follow the course of these subsidiaries of United Corporation, with which It is closely associated, a large hole would be left in the association’s rsnks. Suggestions that the break occurred because of a clash between Insull and Morgan interests could not be confirmed.

Kindness Kills By United Prett NEW YORK, Aug. 21. Equine Ingratitude as exemplified by a Brooklyn truck horse today turned sixteen hours of hard w r ork into useless recreation. The horse, led alongside Wallabout creek, shied at a passing automobile and fell in. William Cartridge, who had been leading him, gathered sixteen men to help get the horse back on land. After an hour, the animal, safe on the bank, shook himself violently, and dropped dead.

dustries. Officials said they furnish a “good sample” of the reductions that have occurred in employment and wage payments. On the basis of statistics available for the non-manufacturing group of industries, department economists said the reports indicated the great anthracite coal fields of Pennsylvania, the bituminous coal industry of West Virginia and Kentucky, and the oil fields of Oklahoma, Texas and California have lowered wage payments as much as manufacturers of New England and the middle west.
