MASTER ACTING OF PROSECUTOR ASTOUNDS JURY Courtroom Turned Into Stage by Amazing Plea for Killer’s Conviction. H’l United Press LOS ANGELES, Aug. 20.—Special Prosecutor Joseph Ford was accredited today with “a masterful bit of stagecraft” in his efforts to convict David H. Clark, former assistant prosecutor, of murder. Ford’s actions, bringing about forcibly the one big point he wished to impress upon the jury, caused postponement until today of the final arguments. It was predicted the case would go to the jury by noon. Clark, then a judicial candidate, was charged with killing Herbert Spencer and Charles Crawford, political powers, last May 20. He pleaCfed self-defense. When it came time for Ford to make his final plea that Clark be hanged, he literally floundered about through an hour of ineffective arguments. Shuffles to Jury Box Ford apologized frequently, explaining he had a cold. Spectators, acquainted with his record, found it hard to believe that even with a cold he could be so ineffective. Not knowing he was acting a part, they were mystified. The session was becoming dull when Ford shuffled to the jury box, leaned on the railing, and sighed: “Folks, I’m 54 years old. When a man is my age he’s not going around starting fights. ”Hc’s not grabbing stalwart young men of 33 by the throat. He’s not—- “ Why folks, Charlie Crawford was my age! He was 54! ‘ Do you think he grabbed husky Dave Clark, who’s 33 and athletic, by the throat and threatened to kill him last May 20?" “Store Teeth Coming Loose” Ford was silent for a moment while the jury looked at his stooped shoulders. Then he turned to Judge Stanley Murray. “My store teeth are cornin’ loose, your honor, and I’m tired. Could v'e have a recess until tomorrow morning?” The recess was granted. Ford, in the opinion of courtroom spectators, had lived up to the final admonition of Defense Attorney W. I. Gilbert, who told the jury: “Look out for old Uncle Joe Ford. He’s a crafty old codger.” COAL PROBE IS BEGUN Labor Department Agents Scan Situation in West Virginia. Training Your Dog BY L. J. BROSEMER Director Chappell Kennel Foundation NUMBER TEN
TODAY we will answer a question that has been asked a number of times. Can all dogs be taught? Yes, almost all of them. A few can not because the ability is not in them. But 95 per cent of them have such ability and only require effort, patience and repetition to bring it out of them. There is so much pleasure to be gotten from a dog trained than from one not trained that all effort and patience in this direction is well repaid. Another question often asked is whether one or more than cne person should handle the dog while he is being trained. Only one person should be the dog’s instructor during the entire course. After a dog is trained he should go through the commands lot any one who gives them properly? tt a DOGS are like human beings in their tendency to imitate. Therefore, the early training of a dog is most important. A dog not trained or disciplined during the first twelve months of his life, will be unmanageable and undependable when grown. If a grown dog is inclined to be vicious or nervous, the fault is with the master who controlled his destinies when he was a puppy. Two things concern the dog’s I healtn most, his stomach and ex- j ercise. Give a dog much exercise; you can scarcely give him too much. Let him be the judge of that; he will stop when he has had enough. Do not exercise him, however, immediately after he lias eaten. If a dog must be kept indoors take him out at least twice a day, preferably not on the leash. Few dogs ned a leash. If they do, the master has failed to train the dog to follow him. tt tt tt WILL JUDY, editor of the Dog World and a well-known authority, states that as long as a dog has a cold nose, a bright eye and a good appetite, he is in good health. On the other hand, a warm nose, no passage from the bowels, no appetite and a coloring of the white of the eyes around the pupil are symptoms of sickness. A dog is a valuable piece of property. When he is ailing, the services of a veterinarian should be used without delay. A veterinarian loves dogs, else he would not be a veterinarian. In all cases, he does his best. TORCH SLAYERS OFFJOPRISON Ypsilanti Trio Removed Under Armed Escort. By United Press JACKSON, Mich., Aug. 20.—A motor caravan of heavily-armed officers left here early today for Marquette state prison bearing the Ypsilanti torch slayers. The prisoners—Fred Smith, Frank Oliver and David Blackstone —are sentenced to four consecutive life terms, a minimum of 240 years each, for the slaying and burning of two young couples near Willis, Mich. Three automobiles carried the party. Their guards kept secret the route they w'ould travel, whether they would transfer to other means of transportation, and the scheduled time of arrival. The prisoners’ transfer was ordered when Washtenaw county authorities failed Wednesday to connect the trio with other robberies and slayings, although they were suspected in several other cases. Two witnesses tentatively identified Smith as the attacker of a Detroit girl, but later said they were “not sure.” ANN ARBOR, Mich., Aug. 20. Despondent and worried because he was in jail, Paul Keene, itinerant bootlegger arrested as a suspect in the Ypsilanti torch murders last week before the actual killers ■were caught, Wednesday night tried to end his life in- the county jail here. Keene, awaiting sentence on a liquor charge, slashed his throat with a safety razor blade and his condition is serious.

Noone, Center township trustee, has slashed the 1932 tax levy of her township 77 cents on each SIOO of taxable property. This reduction, which sets the tentative township rate at 694 cents, according to Miss Noone’s announcement today, Is believed the largest rate decrease of any taxing unit in the state. The cut was made despite a 3.6cent increase in the poor relief fund rate and a decrease in property valuations. Miss Noone estimates her budget for 1932 at $759,419. She reduced three township funds and eliminated two others. No appropriation for the special school fund is requested, although
this item is $23,494.38 this year. A road fund of $1,142.15 also was eliminated. The township fund was reduced from $10,833.56 to $1,198, and the bond fund was slashed from $11,095.19 to $9,358. Total budget reduction, exclusive of poor relief, was $33,561.80. The rate will be divided: Tuition fund. 33 cents; bond fund, 24 cents, and poor found, 124 cents. Miss Noone raised her tuition fund from $11,421.52 to $12,958. Lax bookkeeping by her predecessor left large balances in the tuition and school funds this year, Miss Noone . declared. She succeeded Mrs. Amelia Harding, Republican, Jan. 1.
