WHAT’S IN FASHION?
YORK, Aug. 14.—Like the peas-pomdge game tne children play, where “some like it hot and some ltke it cold"—some people like three-piece suites in their living rooms, some like a sofa and an odd chair. But most people nowadays, so our checkups on fashionably furnished homes show, like the two-piece suite. A sofa and chair to match. Why? For one reason it’s easier to fit just two pieces into many modern rooms. For another reason, people like to introduce the fashionable and decorative contrasting note in their second chair. For a third reason, so they say, it’s less monotonous. For rooms where space and the proportions of the other furniture permit, there’s nothing more comfortable and luxurious looking than the two-piece English lounge suite. Charles of London Suite You probably recognize the names of the two mast fashionable of these —the Charles of London suite and the English Club suite. A Charles of London, with its flat arms and massive lines, is pictured in one of the accompanying sketches. They go well not only with Early English furniture, but with the later English furniture (if it's not the very fragile-looking type) and with the so-called “non-period” furniture. That word non-period, by the way, only means that it has no particular details characteristic of historic periods, but is just good-looking, solid, comfortable furniture of 1931. The fashionable upholsteries on this fashionable heavy, comfortablelooking furniture are the heavier kinds that look well with massive lines. They have a decided texture, both soft and rough, such as you feel in tapestries, friezes, heavy brocatelles, mohairs and antique velvets. Fit Suites to Room Now if your living room isn’t the size that such large pieces can fit into without seeming to crowd the rest of the furniture out, you can still be fashionable—and very comfortable, too— with one of the lighter weight suites. And the well-known Lawson and Queen Anne types are the two most found in fashionable homes. The Lawson has simple, straight lines that make it suitable in any setting, period or non-period. It can be very dressy covered with damask, very practical in denim or very quaint in a chintz with box pleated ruffle. Queen Anne Type Graceful The Queen Anne is one of the most graceful types of suites there is and therfe are several versions, some delicate looking and some quite heavy. Some, in fact, are so heavy and clubby looking that it takes two looks to recognize their Queen Anne features. And these features are, as you can see in the other accompanying illustration, the curved lines and cabriole legs. Lighter weight coverings look best on the Lawson and Queen Anne suits. Finer tapestries, brocatelles, damasks, mohairs and friezes. Some of the medium weight novelty fabrics are effective on these, too. Two-Piece Suites In addition to these good types there are many two-piece suites without any of the period features, but plenty of comfort and dura- i

bility. Usually these are covered in tapestry or mohair, with reversible cushions. For a while back it’s been the fashion for suites like these to show no- wood frame at either top and bottom-but to be fully upholstered. Now some of the newer ones are showing a bottom frame again, usually with a little carving that gives it a slightly elaborated, more formal feeling. Another new Idea in two-piece suites is to have sofa and chair covered in different fabrics, but harmonizing colors. For instance, an English loußge sofa could be covered in a brown tapestry with rust and green in the design; with the accompanying lounge chair In a plain rust or green.
