TRAINING YOUR DOG BY L. J. BROSEMER, Director Chappell Kennel Foundation.
NUMBER FOUR WHERE else can you get a. much fun, companionship, devotion and loyalty as from a dog, whether he be a show winner or Just a dog? • . For the growing boy or girl, a puppy is an ideal possession; the fact that the dog looks up to the child trustingly and 1 obediently causes the child to play the part of the leader and master and to be worthy of his confidence. All the things we have talked about in the previous articles of this series should be gone over often, but not too often at a time. Leave just a minute or two between attempts. Do not tire the dog; do not attempt to go through too many lessons in one period. Two or three commands each day are sufficient. But stop work only on a successful performance. After a time the dog will realize that he must keep at it until he succeed. 1 . There is no particular value or virtue in the words of command we have chosen. You can teach your dog to get down when you say “Up” and to get up when you command “Down.” Choose a word for each act and always use it. And whether your dog speaks English, German or Turkish, he will understand you. a a tt WE have had the command |“Down” for lying down. We now have the command “Sit,” when we wish the dog to sit on his haunches. Take hold of Spot by the collar with one hand and with the other press on his loins while commanding “Sit.” Press slightly on the loins, that portion of the body directly before the hind legs. Most dogs, such as terriers, like
to jump, and it is comparatively jasy to teach them to do so. Place a stick on the floor, with one end against the wall. Snap the fingers, hold some mcrsel of food in the hand and tempt the dog across the stick. Command “Jump” each time. Raise the stick about an inch-and repeat the process; then raise the stick another inch or two, and so on. •> u tt PREVENT the dog from going around the ends of the stick or underneath. And do not make him fearful by having him jump on a hard or slippery floor. Later, you can use your arms for a barrier. Jumping over walls and high barriers should be done only with the larger breeds of dogs, such as shepherds, aird&ies and Doberman pinschers. Much has been said about shy and nervous dogs. It is difficult to say before a dog is 6 months old

whether the shyness is inborn or due to conditions in his surroundings. If it is inborn, the dog is to be pitied rather than punished; if due to conditions, usually improper feeding, it can be removed. Lack of running and outdoor living is another leading cause of nervousness in dogs. Take the dog with you. gain his confidence, do not pull him on the lead, and encourage when noises are at hand. But above all, give him plenty of exercise. (To Be Continued) This Is Cause for Divorce DETROIT, Aug. 13. Ralph Wightman practically was stunned, he told the court, when his bride of a day confided that he had become the step-father of three boys, children he never heard of during the courtship. The court granted him a divorce.
