murder charge ECHOES BLOODY BATTLEON SHIP Freighter’s Officer Says He Killed Giant Seaman in Self-Defense. By Vnitrd I'm* NEW YORK, Aug. 13.—Fists, a fire ax. and a gun figured in a battle to death between Leonard C. Adams, slow speaking, powerfully built chief officer of the American freighter Sundance, and a giant Esthonian seaman, Adams revealed as he was arrested here charged with murder on the high teas. Adams was arrested on a federal warrant as he arrived on the Homeric, en route to his wife and children in South Jacksonville, Fla. He had been exonerated on the murder charge by Belgian officials. The accused man, a war veteran, and for thirty-nine years a seaman, described the dead sailor as Myak Wooker, 6 feet 6 inches tall. The Sundance left Savannah June 30. In Ghent, many of the crew went ashore against orders. Belgian police rounded up the missing seamen, and put them aboard in a roaring, mutinous mood. Adams went to rout out Wooker, who he said, was hiding under his bunk in port at Ghent. “Wooker swung. I blocked him. He Jumped on me, then kicked me foul. I fell. “Wooker, screaming, grabbed the fire ax, and as I scrambled to my feet, I fired at him, the bullet piercing his skull.
