POLICE COSTING HOOSIERS LESS THAN YEAR AGO State Department Savings SB,OOO Reported by by Garrott. For the first ten months of the riscal year ending Sept. 30, 1031, Indiana state police have operated on SB,OOO less expenditures than for the corresponding period in 1930, despite increased personnel, according to a tabulation made public from the office of Chief Grover C Garrott. While there was a deficit of •2,934.52 in the motor theft fund, the department had sufficient funds in the new motor police fund to leave a real balance of $32,801.74, the. report showed . Under the former administration the deficit for the period was $14,767.75. Statement Hits Fifield “In other words the fund was five times as heavily overdrawn on the same date one year ago under then Secretary of State Otto G. Fifield as it is now under Secretary of State Frank Mayr Jr.,” Captain Howard Smith, who compiled the figures, pointed out. “Yet we have increased the personnel of the department from the former total of forty-four to sixtyone and are giving more mileage patrol service than at any rime in the department's history.” Personnel increase was instituted July 1. Receipts for tMe motor theft fund to July 31, was $143,883.25 and disbursements $151,817.77, leaving the $2,934.52 deficit.
