SANITY HEARING IS SOUGHT FOR EDITOR^WIDOW Mrs. Benjamin Wood, Now 93-Year-Old Recluse, Once Social Ruler. By United Prei NEW YORK, Aug. 6.—A 93-year-old recluse who once reigned in the south as the belle of New Orleans, moved into New York society during the “parasol age,” and danced with the late King Edward VII when as prince of Wales he visited New York, may be declared incompetent under an application before the supreme court today. The woman, Mrs. Benjamin Wood, was the sister-in-law of F’emando Wood, mayor of New York from 1855 to 1860. Otis P. Wood, son of Fernando, filed the application. Llvtft in Past Mrs. Wood, living in memories of the past while a resident of the Herald Square hotel, will permit no one to administer to her wants. For several years she has refused to leave her rooms, the application says. The aged woman has lived in solitude since March 5, when her sister, Mrs. Mary E. Mayfield, died. Her unmarried daughter, Miss Emma Wood, died two years ago when 70 years old. The three had lived together, shut off most of the time from the rest of the world. On rare occasions, Mrs. Wood would pack her clothing and start for Europe. Her style was that which graced the streets of New York in 1860 to 1870. And her memories were of that day. Helped Edit Paper Mrs. Wood helped edit the New York Daily News, owned and edited by her husband until his death, as a Democratic newspaper. After Wood’s death, she edited and looked over proofs carried to her by pneumatic tube from Park Row to her suite at the Fifth avenue hotel. She directed that the paper’s Democratic policies “be unadulterated." An order for trial of the facts concerning Mrs. Wood’s mental condition was granted by Justice John F. Carew and a special guardian for Mrs. Wood’s rather extensive property holdings was appointed pending the hearing. Beer Seizure Reported MONTICELLO, Ind., Aug. 6. Officers who raided the home of Albert Bowsher near here, reported the seizure of 225 bottles of home brew.

Yes, sir! Some of the faces above are as familiar as the Indiana theater. But one oft! 2 charming girls here 1s a newcomer at the Paramount lot. Would it help any to tell you that she has a feminine lead in the first picture to be presented by Stuart Walker ... or that she took the place of Clara Bow in the last picture in which the “It" girl worked before her last physical breakdown? And just to help a little more, one of the other girls here formerly lived in Indiana. Lean bought It In June, 1930, the News said, paying for it partly with a first mortgage on his Saratoga property. Four unpaid notes totaling $11,500 were said to be held by Martin Rosenthal of Philadelphia. McLean already owned the famed Hope diamond, a blue Indian gem of forty carats, which tradition says brings ill fortune to its possessor. The great sapphire is encircled by several hundred small diamonds.

An Indian majarajah is reputed to have bought it for his favorite wife in the twelfth century. Later it passed into the hands of the Romanoff dynasty. After the death of the imperial Russian family, it was smuggled into the United States. For a time the sapphire was displayed in an Atlantic City Jewelry shop. There McLean saw it and determined to buy it.
