UTILITIES WEIGH CITY'S DEMAND FOR RATE CUTS Water and Light Companies to Answer Next Week; Mayor Insistent.
Answer of utility companies to demands of the city for substantial reduction in enormous utility bills, voiced at two conferences Monday afternoon with Mayor Reginald H. Sullivan, will be presented early next week. In addition to Sullivan and other city officials, the parleys were attended by representatives of the Indianapolis Power and Light Company and the Indianapolis Water Company. In anonuncing the conferences, Sullivan pointed out the city annually pays light and water bills totaling nearly $1,000,000, based on rates fixed during a period of greater prosperity than the present. Drain General Fund The city is buying electricity under a ten-year contract expiring in April, 1935. No contract is held with the water company, rates being fixed by the public service commission. Declaring that 75 per cent of general fund revenue is spent on utility bills and police and firemen’s salaries, Sullivan said the remaining 25 per cent leaves little opportunity for tax cuts. At the same time, he expressed vigorous opposition to reduction in pay of police and firemen, citing the daily dangers to which members of these departments are exposed. New Rates Due, Claim The city is entitled, he asserted, to reduction in the annual $485,000 bill for electricity and $490,000 bill for water. He said he was informed adjustment of rates, based on cost of coal, provided in the light contract, has not been made. Light and power rates paid by the city under the 1925 contract are in excess of those paid by larger city industries, Sullivan said he has been informed, although an exact comparison is not possible. The water company was represented by Howard S. Morse, manager, who said he would confer with President Clarence H. Geist, while the light company was represented by Clifford L. Harrod, general manager; Emmet G. Ralston, engineer, and Elmer E. Scott, legal representative. WILKINS’ SUB DELAYED Nautilus Lays Over in Bergen, Awaiting Repairs.
