LINDBERGHS TO TAKE OFF NEXT TO BAKER LAKE Flier and Wife Welcomed hy Colorful Throng at Churchill. (Continued from day's continuation of the trip to the Orient. She smiled frequently at the husky trappers who paddled their canoes around the floating plane, anxious for a glirr.pse of the most famous flying couple in the world. When they finally left the plane and were brought to shore in a canoe, they were given a welcome such as the far northland probably never witnessed before. Sirens shrieked, bells rang and horns tooted from the town and from the few thlps that rode in the harbor. Bunting flew from every building. Shouts that rang out from the strong-throated northerners echoed and re-echoed across the water and through the surrounding forests. Among the crowd which welcomed them were trappers, traders, swarthy-faced Indians, tradesmen dressed in the rough clothes of the north, and, here and there, a mounted policeman of the famous Canadian royr.l force. Only a few women were In the crowd, aa women are not numerous in this cold, dangerous north country into which Anne Lindbergh has ventured. Kydd, a bachelor, left, his cottage for the night to the exclusive use of the visiting couple. The Lindberghs retired early to rest, in preparation for the flight today to Baker lake. Starting with their flight westward from Baker lake and the bay, the couple face perhaps one of the most dangerous parts of their long flight There are many rivers and lakes upon which they can land, but for the most part they will be flying over wild, desolate glacial deposits, forests in which no human being lives, scrambled terrain of rock and sand, and wide expanses ■where even animals can not live for long. May Change Route By United Press EDMONTON, Alta , Aug 3 nel Charles a Lindbergh was reported today to have changed his route plans to avoid flying hazards, where possible. According to the reports, the Colonel and his wife will fly the southern and more circuitous route from Baker Lake to Aklavik. Official confirmation of such decision on the part of Lindbergh was lacking. All radio stations in the north country were notified to maintain constant communication with the plane as it w 7 ings its way west from Baker Lake over barren lands. Edmonton aviators said it would be unwise for Lindbergh to attempt, a straight-line flight to Aklavik, because in case of a forced landing, he would be far from posts between the two points of his flight. The route deemed most advisable by experienced fliers would take the Lindberghs from Baker lake to Beverly lake, and from Beverly lake to Ft. Reliance at McLeod bay on Great Slave lake. Ft Reliance has a powerful radio station and mounted police. From Ft Reliance the air trail passes on to Hunter bay, on Great Bear lake From that point, Lindbergh would have little difficulty, airmen said, in following the Great Bear and Mackenzie rivers to Aklavik A further advantage of the southern route is that it lies over a country dotted with lakes and rivers, which would afford the Lindberghs safe landings in event of motor trouble. 14 COMMITTEES CHOSEN Preparations Made for State Social Work Conference in Fall. LONDON TO GET ITS BEER FROM SLOT MACHINES Automatic Bars on Streets Will Evade 12-Hour Closed Period. BY RICHARD D. MMILLAN United Press Staff Correspondent PARIS, Aug. 3—Automatic beer delivered on the shilling-in-the-slot system is to be made available to the thirsty in London by a syndicate formed on the Riviera. Beer will be available all hours of the day and night, thus evading the London licensing restrictions The sponsor of the scheme is a British naval officer. On a visit to Nice, he quenched his thirst at one of the automatic beer pumps there, so he decided similar pumps in the streets of London could make him a fortune. The latest hour at which any one may obtained a drink in a public house in London is 11 p m. and the earliest hour in the morning 11 a. m In the same way it is impossible to buy cigarets In London after 8 p. m. To supply cigarets after that hour the cigaret manufacturers installed automatic machines all over the city. The automatic beer syndicate plans to follow this idea in selling shilling-in-the-slot drinks. Beer only will be sold at first. If authorities rule the enterprise is legal, the promoters will set up whisky, gin and even cocktail automatics, all delivering a glass of the drinker’s favorite beverage. • The syndicate announced that expert legal counsel has been retained, as action by London authorities to prohibit the selling of drinks in this manner was expected.
