TNDIANAPOLIS’ six man public A links golf team will entrain next Saturday afternoon for the trip to Bt. Paul where they will compete in the tenth annual United States Golf Association Public Links championship over Keller golf course, Aug. 4 to $, inclusive. Kller course Is the same course where the *IO.OOO st. Paul open was held the cast week-end. Inasmuch as Ralph Stonehouse. Pleasant Run pro. and Massle Miller nlaved In It and made a (treat showing in the open. It might be well for the local bovt to get together with these two when they return from Bt. Paul and get a line on the course. Btonehouse fired 298 In the big money event, which is not very much over par and Massle came In with 301 for the *eventy-two holes. No doubt they learned some very interesting features about the Keller layout, such as where the treacherous penalty spots are located and what shots are to be avoided. Thursday night of this week finds the six players who are to represent our city ift the national event guests of the South drove Men’s Club et a chicken dinner at South Orove. Every golfer In the city Is invited to attend, according to Kenneth Loucks. president. Several speeches will be made and maybe among them a few words of advice from Stonehouse and Miller. The members of the team. William Helnleln and Johnny McGuire of Speedway. William Russell of Pleasant Run, Dave Mitchell of South Grove. Mike Poliak of Riverside and Edwin Beeson of Sarah Shank will be the honored guests. John Nlblack. secretary of the Indianapolis Public Links Association, and Harry Schornstein, vice-president, will be present and give each player his railroad ticket and Instructions. an n JOHNNY M’GUIRE will be named team captain. McGuire has been on the Indianapolis team before, i.nd should know how to direct the play of the local boys at St. Paul. He will submit the names of Helnleln, himself, Russell and Mitchell as the Indianapolis four-man team to play for the Harding cup at St. Paul. They were the four low qualifiers in the local thirty-six-hole tournament. Dave Mitchell will act as secretary and treasurer of the local team and will handle the finances. Leaving here at 5 p. m. over the Big Pour route, the team will make close connections In Chicago to the Chicago. Milwaukee & St. Paul railroad for the overnight trip to St. Paul, arriving at 8:30 a. m. Sunday. Thus they will have two days of practice over the course before the qualifying play Tuesday. Headquarters, for the team wiU be the St. Paul hotel. A banquet will be held on Monday night, Aug. 3, at the hotel for the officials of the U. S. G. A. and players. At that time the local delegation will present several letters from local officials. Mayor Sullivan, park board members. Chamber of Commerce and others Inviting the national tournament here In 1932 or 1933, preferably 1033. Indianapolis has more public links than any city In the country. It has many other civic features. When the new Coffin course Is completed, we will be In perfect position to entertain the national event. Dlddel promises the course will be In perfect shape for 1933. The dinner Wednesday night at South Grove will begin at 6:30 and will cost $1,50. The number will be limited to sixty. If you intend to be there, get hold of Kenneth Loucks at once.^ NEXT Tuesday and Wednesday will find the 1931 state open championship on tap at Speedway course. The championship will open on Monday with an eighteen-hole pro-amateur, which will give the boys a chance to look at the course before the big test. On Tuesday morning the big show will start. It will be 36 holes on Tuesday and the same number on Wednesday. Playoff of ties will come Thursday, if needed. Johnny Watson of South Bend will be on hand to defend his title, won last year at Gary. Guy Paulsen. Neal Mclntyre, Ralph Stonehouse. Massle Miller, Bill Tinder and Chick Garringer are the prominent challengers. Indianapolis fans ore certain to see some of the finest shooters in the country In the event. Guy Paulsen, former state open champ, was right In the thick oI the recent national pen championship to the very last round at Toledo. Neal Mclntyre’s ability is known the country over and certainly the showing of Stonehouse and Miller at St. Paul is not to be overlooked. tt M U Last winter The Times held an essay contest for women giving six free lessons to the forty women who wrote best essays on "Why I Would Like to Play Golf.” One of the winners was Mrs. Lois Johnson, 601 Arlington avenue. Last week Mrs. Johnson played in the wbmen's state championship at Avalon and the fact that she carried home a prise as winner of one of the consolation flights should encourage other beginners. Roy Smith and Dick Nelson were the instructors of the indoor school classes. Investment Trust Shares (By Gibson & Bernardi PRICES ARE TO 12 NOON C. S. T. —Julv 28— Bid. Ask.
