OUR CITY MAID IS ‘HYPOCRITE' ABOUT HER FAG ‘Sure, I Smoke —but You Can’t Print That!’ . They Warn. BY EDWARD C. FULKE. "... and do you smoke?” Little Modem hesitated, looked up and down the street, and bit her lip. “Well, yes, but I wouldn’t want the world to know it.” And now the deep, dark secret is out. “Mother doesn’t know It, and I ! wouldn't say anything about it for ! the world.” Twenty of Indianapolis’' fairest girls, picked at random on downtown streets, let the cat out of the bag today. They keep their tobacco “passion” strictly to themselves. And reformers "just don’t click.” At least, that is the consensus. Give Him Ten Months Wednesday, C. W. Hardwick, 50 of 111 North Drexel avenue, an in- i surance salesman, was sentenced to I ten days in jail and fined SSO be- 1 cause he knocked a cigaret from the mouth of Mrs. Marjorie Palecco as she sat In her husband’s car j downtown. That is “perfectly all right” with little Miss Modern. “He should have had ten months,. and if I would have been the woman he’d have got slapped right back.” Nineteen of the twenty pretty, misses made that statement, in sub- j stance. The twentieth, petite, but; rather severe, thought “Mr. Reformer” did “just right.” “She shouldn't have been smok- ! ing out on the street. Its much less i offensive in private.” “Do you carry your own cigarets?” Why, the Hypocrite “Now, I don’t think that’s any of four business.” Tire answer was unmistakably a reprimand. “Would you pose for a picture?” “Oh, my, no. I couldn’t think of it. Really, it isn't other people’s j business.” “But why . . .” “But you’re so inquisitive. I've smoked for years. It, isn’t any harm, j But if mother knew it, she’d just ! die. I couldn’t say anything publicly.” They Just won’t talk, the little hypocrites. LIFE INSURANCE RECEIPTS DROP 75 Per Cent Decrease Is Shown by Underwriter. Why not blame it, like everything else, on the depression? However, eleventh in population among all the states, Indiana was twelfth in the r mount of life insurance premiums received. The total was $42,500,000, or about $13.18 per capita. Largest single policy paid in the state was on that held by the late Wallace G. Himmelwright of Frankfort, for $220,837. Albert G. Snider. Indianapolis, carried $185,000 insurance, and Charles E. Hall, Indianapolis, $179,000. By far the largest city in the state, Indianapolis led in receipts with $8,800,000 paid in here.
