SANITARY CHIEF URGES $50,000 SALARY SLASH (Continued from Page 1) statements from heads of the various sanitary district plants under our control, especially as to the statements that our employes are underpaid. “I find salaries, instead of being lower, are, in fact, higher than are paid for similar work in industrial pin .‘,o and in other like departments in other cities.” He pointed out that employes were not faced with the short term of office in the sanitary district as in other city departments, which shift ■with the political winds. He believed employes in short-tenure offices should be paid more, although many receive less. Work Under Handicaps Jeup also said the department was working under handicaps of a 6 to 5-cenl reduction in this year's tax levy decrease in selling price of byproducts and drop in amount of taxes collected. "I have reached the decision that the most promising field for a reduction in operating expenses is in salaries,” he concluded. Under the proposal. Truly Nolen, superintendent of collections, would be reduced from $4,300 to $3,000; C. T. Calvert, sewage plant head, from $5,400 to J 1.300, with other reductions ranging down to truck drivers and helpers. His proposal on these workers follows; Truck drivers, 55 cents an hour tp 45; helpers, 45 and 50 cents to 40; others receiving 40 to 50 cents an hour to receive slight reductions; 50 to 60 cents an hour employes, an 8 per cent cut. with other department heads to feel a lj per cent slice of the reduction ax. Minor Increases Proposed Minor increases in salary, including that of Arno G. Fiefker, power plant head, from $350.33 a month to $360, and Floyd Baber of the garbage plant, $306 to $330, are proposed as equalization steps. However, to block the decrease of byproducts’ sales, Jeup proposes to hire a sales manager next year at $2,700 annual salary. Jeup said this amount would include expenses and probably would result in the actual salary being but about half of the. total figure. He said sale of institution and hotel garbage to hog feeders greatly has cut down revnue that ordinarily would have gone to the city department. That the department will face a deficit unless expenses are reduced, was set out by the board president. He said he hoped the district would stay within a 5-cent tax levy next year,. although an 8-cent levy is needed to operate and purchase additional machinery.

Marriage Mart By United Pres* WINNIPEG, Man., July 23. The marriage market opened strong today with at least three bids for the hand of the Lancashire, England, girl who sent a request to Mayor Ralph Webb to find her an eligible young man under 30. One of the men, who lives near Ft. Francis, said he was interested “if she ain't no cripple.” He expressed disgust with modern girls, because, he said, "they drink too much beer.” In her letter, the girl said she was a mill worker and "neither danced nor led a fast life.”
