NEW BAND MAKES ITS DEBUT AT INDIANA Nancy Carroll and Fredric March Have the Leads in “The Night Angel,” a New Dramatic Photoplay. THREE highlight* mark the Indiana theater bill which opens today. First Is Paramount’s latest screen release, "The Night Angel,” cofeaturing those two dramatic stars who made such a hit in "Laughter," recently. Second, is the Publlx "Bummer Follies” and third is C. G. Conn, Junior’s, radio band of fifty kiddies. These kiddies are a local organization and have met with such success in the past that the management booked them for a week in keeping with the "home town” talent offering policy which the Indiana stage inaugurated during the "Brooke Johns era.”

" The Might Angel” is an original story written and directed by Edmund Goulding, the young genius who wrote and directed “The Trespasser” and "The Devil’s Holiday.” Mias Carroll, in the title role of the production, is 6een as the daughter of an impoverished and • disgraced countess who owns and operates a notorious night club in Prague, gay capital of modern Bohemia. March is the public.prosecutor, a brilliant legal mind, who brings about the arrest and incarceration of‘the countess only to arouse the hatred of the tempestuous Nancy. When a brutal employe of the cabaret concocts a fiendish plot against March, Nancy’s feelings toward the handsome young man change to love—and the ensuing events lead the audience through a series of scenes in which action and suspense are present. Bupporting the co-stars of this film are Phoebe Foster, Alison Skipworth and Alan Hale. Red Donahue and company, Jimmy Ray, Stadler and Rose and th? Evans-Buies Girls are included among the "Summer Follies” unit entertainers. a a a Other theaters today offer: Nick Lucas at the Lyric, “Vice Squad” at

CARTER In order to lend further distinction to an already brilliant cast headed by Mrs. Leslie Carter and her daughter, Arthur Casey has obtained Douglas Wood from Los Angeles, Cal., to play the important role of Sir Guy Charteris in "The Shanghai Gesture,” which will open at English’s theater Sunday night. The role of Charteris is longer than any other part except that of Mother Goddam which Mrs. Carter will play, and Wood is especially I familiar with it in view of the fact j that he has acted it hundreds of times with Mrs. Carter in her recent appearances in the play. Douglas Wood is the son of the late Ida Jeffrey Goodfriend who was at one time leading woman with Augustin Daly’s company and a i noted interpreter of Ibsen. He has the distinction of making his stage deput with Richard Mansfield, later playing Shakespearian repertoire with Ben Greet. In re-

cent years, Wood has supported William Hodge in "The Old Rascal,” Grace George in “Marie Antoinette,” and has had good parts in "Gods of the Lightning,” “Give and Take,” “Trelawney of the Wells,” as well as in other plays. His Los Angeles appearances, aside from his engagements with Mrs. Carter in “The Shanghai Gesture,” include a part in "The Battle,” with Wilton Lackaya and one with Pauline Lord in “On Trial.” Casey has also signed Mildred Hastings, former Berkell character actress, who is a favorite here, to | join his company in “The Shanghai Gesture.” She will portray two roles Ching Chang Mary and Countess Mlchot—which require her to change her makeup, costumes, and demeanor In the short intermission between the first and second acts. Miss Hastings is to remain as a regular member of the Casey organization during the rest of the season. Besides the players already mentioned, the cast of "The Shanghai Gesture” will contain Frances Dale, Donald Woods, Milton Byron, Freddie Sherman, Walter Davis, Yvonne Stebbins, Dick Elliott, Jack Storey, Neil Firestone, and a score of others.
