U. S. TINKERS WITH FIGURES. EXPERT HINTS Dismissed Finance Man Is Supported by Yale Educator. S’J Scrippt.Howard Sewsf,ap*r Alliance WASHINGTON. July 14.—Dismissal of Dr. Ray O. Hall as financial expert for the United States Department of Commerce is symptomatic of a tendency "apparent in Washington to hide expert findings behind a false front of political expediency,” in the opinion of Prolessor James Harvey Rogers, wellknown economist. Regers, Yale faculty member and expert for the committee on recent economic changes, is here to finish book. "America Weighs Her Gold.” He not only supported Dr. Hall in the controversy, but said that his dismissal bares a tendency “suspected by many economists in the country” to ignore expert opinion when such opinion conflicts with political opportunism. In an interview today, Rogers referred to preir, stcrie on the tinkering of the Wickersham report on prohibition: on alleged ignoring by the administration of important recommendation:. from Colonel Arthur Woods cf the emergency employment committee: on the shelving of the Stern-Poliak account of the Mooney-Billings trials by Chairman Wickersham; on overoptimistic figures on unemployment by the department of labor. “The ‘Hall affair’ appears to r<*: a.s a clear and extreme example of ft tendency, apparent here In Washington and suspected by many economists in the country, to misuse of expert findings. We were led to believe that this is a scientific administration. “In interpreting the data of experts it appears that often officials have been guided by political considerations rather than by scientific (realism.” The dismissal of Dr. Hall, together twith his charge that his report was changed in substantial details, Is being investigated by Secretary . Robert Lamont,. Hall charged that the report as issued overvalued 3930 imports by $175,000,001, “greatly exaggerated”’ net exports of capital, and deleted reference to prohibition's effect on Canadian tourist traffic. 75 IN GOLF TOURNEY Brtail Tire Dealers’ Event to Be Held at Broadmoor.
