MERCY PLEAS FAIL; GIRL IS SENT TO PRISON Gets Four Months Sentence for Account Forgery of Mother’s Name. Mercy pleas of a deputy prosecutor, a mother, the defendant’s attorneys, for a 20-year-old girl who forged her mother’s signature to a department store account to obtain $127 in “pretties," failed to bring a tear to the eye of Criminal Judge Frank P. Baker today. In fact, the leniency requests brought nothing but frowns, with the result that Dorothy Gentry, 20, of 836 Edison street, received a fourmonth sentence in the Indiana woman s prison. “This is forgery," declared the judge, "just as much forgery as if it had been a check. This girl’s record isn’t good, she admits being in disreputable places.” “But your honor,” interposed an attorney, “she just bought the goods from the store and charged it to her mother’s account. It isn't like the forgery of a check.” “Four months in the women’s prison,” reiterated Judge Baker. BATHING COSTLY Several Cars Broken Into at McClure Beach. Bathers at McClure beach paid a high price for their swimming Wednesday night, according to reports to police today. Those reporting cars broken into: P. Y. Smashing the window of the parked auto of John F. Banta, Muncie, at Washington street and Capitol avenue, thieves Wednesday night fled with clothes and papers valued at $250, he told police. THREE IIM CRASH Two Are Arrested After Mishap in Brightwood. Three persons were injured, two seriously, today when cars in which they were riding collided at Jefferson and Nowland avenue. Clarence Carter, Negro, 24, of 1019 East Nineteenth street, and his mother, Mrs. Eunice McGowan, Negro, 1210 East Nineteenth street, were taken to city hospital suffering from severe face and body lacerations. Golson T. Phelps, 54, of 1437 East Eleventh street, driver of the other auto, sustained body bruises. Carter and Phelps were charged with failure to have drivers’ licenses and Phelps was slated for having faulty brakes.
