COMMISSIONERS PUT WHITEWASH ON POOR FARM *ln Good Shape/ Verdict ,of Board Despite Attack in Court Report. County commissioners, who Tuesday ate "just like the inmates’’ as the free meal guests of John V. Carter, county poor farm superintendent, will have no report showing conditions to be bad, they admitted today. George Snider and Dow Vorhies related today how they had eaten a ‘ good” meal of meat, beans, potatoes and other substantial foodstuffs, "just like the inmates eat.” "Why, you could hardly tell us from the inmates,” Vorhies said. Both Snider and Vorhies said they made a survey of the institution with Bruce Short, county surveyor. They said they talked to inmates and looked into the darkest nook and corner. Snider said there "will be no report because there is nothing wrong.” He asserted the only deviation from the proper he found was a few inmates who admitted getting whisky “from everywhere.” Both commissioners criticised their minority colleague, John E. Shearer, for his failure to make a foursome at the poor farm. "Why should I go?” Shearer demanded. "It was Just another trip. I had ‘haying’ to do.” Recently the county grand jury indirectly demanded the resignation of Carter and assailed conditions at the Institution. At that time Snider said it "Just was another grand jury report.” KOREA RIOTS CONTINUE Scores Are Reported Wounded in Attacks on Chinese. 2 TEXANS ARE SHOT TO DEATH IN GONBATTLE Ex-Cop Slays Ranger, but Loses Own Life When Chief Fires. By United Press GLADEWATER, Tex., July B.—A gun battle in which a former policeman killed a Texas ranger and in turn was shot to death by Gladewater’s police chief had ended today a feud of several months duration between local and state peace officers. The men killed were Jeff Johnson, veteran member of the police force who was dismissed recently, and Dan McDuffy, a Texas ranger. Scores saw the two killed on a crowded street. Witnesses unanimously agreed that Johnson was the aggressor. He had said earlier in the evening that he was "looking for McDuffy.” The ranger and three other officers drove down the street in an automobile and Johnson fired once with a rifle. McDuffey was killed. Police Chief W. A. Dial, who was
