DEMANDS RAIL LEADERS SHOW SLUMP PROOF Shippers’ Chief Suggests Commissioners Should Probe Earnings. By Rcrippn-tlaward Newspaper Alliance WASHINGTON, July 7.—Railroads seeking a 15 per cent freight rate increase should be called upon by the interstate commerce commission to prove their claim that the slump in revenue is Jeopardizing their securities as investments for savings banks and trust companies. That suggestion was made here Monday by R. C. Fulbrlght, chairman of the legislative committee of the National Industrial Traffic League, one of the largest organizations oi shippers. He said the I. C. C. should ask the carriers to analyze the condition of their securities and other properties from which they receive income that is listed as “other income.” Doubt Frankness “Railroads have contended," Fulbrlght said, “that the availability of their securities for investment purposes is being threatened. This, naturally, has caused concern among banks and insurance companies. In their petition to the commission for Increased freight rates the railroads said: • “ ‘The return on the value of the railway property of Class I carriers . . . was diminished until it reached for the year 1930, 3.54 per cent.’ ” “In prov'ng their claim that this 150 per “cent relationship Is being threatened, the railroads are directing attention to their net railway operating income, but they appear to be less frank about their Income from other sources which is part of their total income,” Fulbrlght said.
Details Wanted “Figures of the interstate commerce commission for 1930 show that the net railway operating income of Class 1 railroads was $868,907,367. The Interest of their funded debt amounts to $490,211,279. Now It does appear from those figures that the income was only a little more than one and one-half times the fixed charges. “In many instances in the interstate commerce commission’s figures on individual roads, the item of r ‘other income’ is large, and the railroads should be asked for detailed figures on it when their case Is heard. JUST ‘SHOT IN~THE~ARIVr 'That’s the Way Senator Nye Views Debt Plan Accord. fiy United Preat MILWAUKEE, Wis., July 7.—The Hoover debt moratorium was viewed today by Senator Gerald P. Nye of North Dakota as a temporary “shot in the arm’’ that probably will alleviate sufferings for the time being, but may lead to complete cancellation of the debts. The only way to meet the situation in a permanently effective way is through world-wide refinancing, Nye declared. He remarked that he was glad to see the moratorium put into effect, but said he couldn’t be as optimistic as some people are about the results it will, bring.’’ THIEVES RIFLE STORE Smash Window to Steal Large Haul of Merchandise.
