STAGE MOURNS DEATH OF STAR PUBLICITY MAN -" ' • Reichenbach, 'Star Maker/ Dies in New York; Pranks Legendary. P>Y H. ALLEN SMITH United Pres* Staff Correspondent NEW YORK, July 4.—Broadway, Park avenue and Hollywood lost one of their most colorful personalities when Harry Reichenbach, press agent, died of an ailment that, in his own words, “jerked me out of the picture’’ some eight months ago. His exploits in the realm of publicity, bordered on the fantastic, made of him a figure almost legendary. “Remember,” they were saying on Broadway today, “the time Harry turned the baboon loose in the Broadway hotel and had half the town scared senseless as a publicity stunt for ‘Tarzan’?" Yes, and the time Harry went to work and, single-handed, stirred up a revolution in South America just because he wanted some excitement and he couldn’t get a boat for home. Pioneered in Movies Reichenbach was only 49—a ratner frail, extremely dignifiedlooking man with an impressive head of white hair. He was a native of Maryland and often boasted that he never received an education, yet could speak six foreign languages fluently. His greatest work came in the early days of the movies. He is credited with having “discovered” Douglas Fairbanks, Marguerite Clark and Clara Kimball Young. Through his intense campaigns of exploitation, he brought popularity to such stars as Barbara Lamarr, and Francis X. Bushman. He gave Rudolph Valentino his first important job and he had acted as personal press agent for Gloria Swanson, Wallace Reid, , Thomas Meighan, Ethel Barrymore*, Charlie Chaplin and Pola Negri.
Runaway at 13 He ran away from home at 13 to Join a dog and pony show. Later associating himself with the Barnum shows, and though without schooling, he started reading and studying in the long railroad treks betwen show towns. His first real publicity job was with William Fox. He served as press agent and associate of such men as David Belasco, Florenz Zicgfeld, Jesse Lasky, Daniel Frohman and Winnie Sheehan. He raised Elinor Glynn's “Three Weeks’’ from an obscure manuscript to a world-famous novel. When Gloria Swanson was ill in Paris, he engineered the news of that illness with such deftness that the story was spread on the front pages of the nation while the death of 500 mine workers in Germany received a paragraph on inside pages. Made ‘lO-Day Star 5 He once bet SSO that he could take Nina Barbour, an unknown sewing machine girl, and in ten days make her a vaudeville headliner. Nina Barbour, within a week, was famous as “The Sweatshop Prima Donna’’ end Reichenbach won the wager. On another occasion he “imported” eight Turks and turned them loose in Central park in a search for the missing “Virgin oi Stamboul.” He offered a $20,000 reward to any native American finding the sheik's missing daughter. And then, a few days later, a motion picture called “The Virgin of Stamboul’’ was announced in Banners on Broadway.
