FOREIGN WHEAT MARTS TARGET OFFWARD Federal Heads Switch Attention to Exports * ’ for Year. By United Press WASHINGTON, July 2.-The federal farm board, committed to a new policy of restricting domestic rales of government wheat, turned today to foreign markets with confidence that additional outlets for its surplus stock would be found. The board is studying the world situation in much the same way that a private business concern would seek new markets if its usual channels of trade were cut off. “The world market for wheat shows improved prospects for the next year,” the board said u r hen it announced restriction of domestic sales. July, August and September are the best months of the year for wheat exports. Most of the 35,000,000 bushels of stabilization wheat stored at export points has been sold. More wheat will be gathered at the ports as demand warrants. For the present the stabilization corporation is not making any sales on the domestic market. This is because of the present range of prices. But the board has announced that this is only temporary and that it hopes to dispose of 60,000,000 bushels in the United States before July 1, 1932. Requirements of millers furnish the principal domestic outlets. Condition Favorable By Tutted Press MICHIGAN CITY, Ind„ July 2. The condition of Mrs. Harry G. Leslie, wife of the Indiana Governor, who underwent an emergency operation for appendicitis here on Wednesday, was reported as favorable today.

NORMA SHEARER’S I MOVIE OPENS SOON t * ‘A Free Soul,’ With Lionel Barrymore, Clark Gable, James Gleason, Lucy Beaumont, Opens at Palace Saturday. EVEN gambling joints have gone “pent-heusey.” In “A Free Soul,” Norma Shearer’s new Metro-Goldwryn-Mayer starring vehicle opening Saturday at the Palace, the huge gaming resort that plays a prominent part in the story is located atop a San Francisco skyscraper. Research experts declare that this is one of the latest innovations in high-class establishments in many cities. Its great glass windows overlook a panorama of the entire city, and one may see from it the Standard Oil building, the Hotel Wiltshire, the Plaza, the Hobart building, the De Young building, the Spreckels building and many other landmarks of the city by the Golden Gate. From one angle one can even see the famous fountain given the city by Lotta Crabtree, me famous actress who used to play to the “forty-niners.”
The penthouse idea affords unusual protection, gamblers say, because the police have to reach the top floor and their coming can be easily “tipped off,” also because elevators don’t run after business hours, except under orders of the gamblers. Clarence Brown directed the new Shearer vehicle, a dramatic story of modern metropolitan life adapted from the novel by Adela Rogers St, Johns. The story concerns the daughter of a famous but constantly inebriated criminal lawyer who has brought his child up with the idea that she should throw convention to the winds and live as she pleases. He realizes the foolhardiness of his free theories when he finds his daughter in the arms of a notorious gambler w'hose daring mode of living has fascinated her. Subsequent events led up to a shootmg and murder trial in which Miss Shearer is given dramatic opportunities. A cast of unusual importance includes Leslie Howard as a millionaire sportsman who attempts to save the girl from her dilemma: Lionel Barrymore as the father; Clark Gable, whose work in “Dance Fools, Dance,” and “The Secret Six” has brought him to the front ranks, as the gambler; James Gleason as a comic bodveuard and Lucv Beau-
mont as the snobbish grandmother. The world’s happenings, explained in detail by the Globe Trotter In the Hearst Metrotone News, a Silly Symphony cartoon comic and a curiosity novelty subject will complete the program. Indianapolis theaters today offer: George Gaul in “Arms and the Man,” at English’s; Fifi D’Orsay, at the Lyric; “The Lawyer’s Secret,” at the Ohio; “Forbidden Adventure,’’ at the Circle; Brooke Johns, at the Indiana; “Indiscreet,” at the Palace; “Annabelle’s Affairs,” at the Apollo, and burlesque at the Mutual. 10 HURT IN EXPLOSION Italian Labor Bureau at Paris Is Blown Up by Shell. By United Pres* PARIS, July 2.—Panic was spread through the center of Paris early today when a thirty-four-pound -artillery shell exploded in the Italian labor bureau. Ten persons were injured, four of them badly. There was no indication how the shell was placed in the office, as police began an investigation. WAGE CUTTING CHECKED, DOAK REPORT SHOWS Debt Holiday Optimism Halts Movement in U. S. for Present. By Bcripps-Hotcard y cusspaper Alliance WASHINGTON, July 2.—The optimism engendered by the proposed : international debt moratorium temporarily has halted the wagecutting movement among American manufacturers, according to Labor Secretary William Doak. The report for the week ending June 27 showed eighty-one labor disputes, forty-eight strikes of minor importance, and only three disputes over wage cuts. Miners were signing up new agreements in western Pennsylvania and West Virginia. Employment was static and wholesale prices were on the decline with the 1926 dollar now able to purchase $1,048 worth of wholesale goods. The month ending May 15 had shown disturbing trends in the reduction of wages. In that month 293 establishments in forty-six industries reported wage decreases. The decreases averaged 10.4 per cent, affected 43,377 workers, or ‘73

per cent of all employes of the factories reporting. The increases were small and few. averaging 3 per cent and affecting 743 persons. Only seven establishments in six industries reported increased wages. This trend, Doak believes, has been halted. "What information we have inclines me to the belief that the wage-cutting campaign among certain employers has been checked in the past ten days,” said Doak. “I would like to believe that this check were permanent. As we come more and more to depend upon the home market it is nothing short of insane to destroy this market’s buying power by the wholesale slashing of wages. "I sincerely trust that the wiser men among the big employers of labor in the United States will prevail and that wage cutting does not become a general policy.’’ Church Event Sunday By Titles Special KNIGHTSVILLE, Ind.. July 2. The annual homecoming of the local Methodist church will be held Sunday. There will be a basket dinner and a program of music and speeches.
