BRITAIN'S ‘BLUE SHIRTS' BEGIN WARJN REDS New English Movement Is Backed by Many Titled Men. BY HENRY T. RUSSELL United Pres* Stiff Correspondent LONDON, June 26.—The formal launching of Britain’s "Blue Shirts" movement occurs tonight at Albert Hall, where more than 10,000 men and women will "drown out the Red flag" to the martial tune of “March On," the "song of the Blue Shirts.” Lieutenant Commander Oliver Locker-ampson, conservative M. P. and founder of the movement which aims to counteract Soviet propaganda in Britain, is the organizer of the meeting. Brigadier-General Sir Henry Page Croft, Lord Middleton and Commander Locker-Lamp-son himself are among the speakers scheduled to address the meeting. The United Press was told at the headquarters of the Blue Shirts today that several hundred requests for seats had to be refused. A blue flag, especially designed to contrast with the red flag associated with the Soviets, will fly from the huge Albert Hall platform tonight. Although the wearing of shirts colored blue is not compulsory to sympathizers with the movement, an attempt is to be made to induce as many of them as possible to wear blue in preference to shirts of other colors. Commander Locker-Lamp-son himself has set the example. He invariably wears a blue shirt and collar, except when wearing dress clothes.

ATHLETICS SEEN AS MAKING BETTER RACE Harvard Professor Cites Statistics Showing Superior Trend. By United Press CAMBRIDGE, Mass., June 26. A race of lithe, erect and shapely humans, the men taller, heavier and of better proportions, the women taller and more graceful than their predecessors, is being developed through college athletics, according to statistics assembled by Professor E. S. Hooton of Harvard university. Data gathered from Harvard, Wellesley, Vassar, Smith and Mt. Holyoke showed that college sons average 5 feet 10.1 inches in

height, one of the tallest groups in the world, and that the average college girl is 6 feet 4.8 inches tall surpassing her ancestors in all bodily respects except breadth of hips. NORTH POLE IS SKIDDING Shifting Southward Seven Inches Yearly, Say Scientists. WASHINGTON, June 26.—The north pole is shifting southward at a rate of seven inches a year, a bulletin issued by the National Research Council reports. This shift is thought due to some slight change in the shape of the earth.

STATE EDITORS BOOM BOWERS FOR PRESIDENCY Democrats Get Behind New Yorker as Indiana ‘Favorite Son.’ BY BEN STERN Times Staff Correspondent GARY, Ind., June 25.—“ Claude G. Bowers, Indiana's favorite son candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination in 1922," was the rallying cry at the Indiana Democratic Editorial Association meeting here today. Efforts to draft a resolution calling upon Bowers, former Indiana and now a New York newspaper man, to run were blocked early today.

Not only will the resolution ask Bowers to permit his name to be used, but the Indiana state convention will be urged to pledge to him its twenty-eight delegates to the national convention. Bowers came to the fore in national politics in 1928 as the keynoter at the Democratic Houston convention. While there is sincere admiration among the Democratic editors here for Bowers, the entire movement is seen as a part of the old Tom Taggart policy to keep the Indiana delegation in the best position for trading. Richard Werneke, Terre Haute Democratic leader, is the busiest man at the meeting. He has brought fifty Terre Haute party workers here and they are booming Bowers for President, Mayor Wood Posey of Terre Haute, for Governor, and young Thomas D. Taggart for national committeeman. Lew Ellingham, Ft. Wayne publisher, also is angling for the committee post and is here, busily engaged in cementing alliances. Frank Mayr Jr., secretary of state, practically is an avowed candidate for Governor. Paul V. McNutt is expected in time for the address by Senator James Hamilton Lewis of

Illinois tonight, the high point ot the meeting. McNutt, however, will make no effort here to engage actively in campaigning for the nomination for Governor, leaving that for his friends. Frank Martin, Lake county chairman, is being mentioned as a possible candidate for Governor in order to withhold the large block of votes of his county from McNutt. Technical discussion and a trip through the Gary steel mills sea- : tured the program today, while the Lewis address at the banquet to- 1 night will be the climax.

FOSSE HUNTS KILLER 500 Oklahomans Closing In on Deputy’s Slayer. By United Press CLEO SPRINGS, Okla., June 26. —Search was renewed early today for a Negro slayer believed to be hiding in the rough country along a branch of the Cimarron river, near here. More than 500 men, who laid siege to the timberland region into which the Negro had fled, formed a line around the arfea. It was believed, however, the Negro had escaped. Feeling was tense against the Negro, Fillmore Davis, who shot down Guy M. Jarvis, Blaine county undersheriff, yesterday. Violence was not expected, however, as the posse was commanded by sheriffs of several counties and national guard officers. RAIDERS GRAB BAD PAIR; ONE IS 10, OTHER 12 Dangerous Criminals Mean Nothing to Brave Squad of Sheriffs. A carload of deputy sheriffs stopped quietly in front of 810 Harmon street late Thursday night. The deputies made no sounds, cautiously approaching the house. They were armed with affidavits for arrest of two alleged burglars wanted in Nashville, Ind., for robbery of a store. They also were armed with revolvers, and were prepared to grab them. When the door was opened, Deputies Charles Hausline and Gus Gatto simultaneously demanded that the two whose names they called be brought forthwith to submit to arrest. They entered the residence and awaited their prey, making sure that no escape effort was made. And in walked the bold, bad burglars. One of them is 10 and the other 12 years old They are brothers. When the officers recovered from the shock of seeing the boyish bandits, they began to question the boys. The deputies said the boys admitted several Indianapolis store lootings and also the Nashville Job. They said the boys implicated three others, the oldest 15, all of whom were arrested and are held in the detention home. But the brothers didn’t seem to mind. They’ll get to see their father again. He’s in jail at Nashville, pending trial on a child neglect charge, authorities said.
