DETROIT SEEKS LOAN TO MEET CITY PAY ROLLS Bankers Demand Paring of Budget; Ford Company Aid Sought. By United Press DETROIT, June 26.—Faced with a shortage of ready cash, and a demand by city bankers that a drastic reduction In the 1931 budget, effective July 1, be made, Mayor Frank Murphy planned a meeting with a group representing the banks to determine if there is any way out of the financial wilderness. The banks have been loaning the city money for current expenses. However, they have reached the loan limits permitted by law, and the city has asked the Ford Motor Company, the Chrysler Corporation and several trust companies to advance short-term loans. The immediate need of cash is the pay roll July 1, and other operating expenses. The money is needed to tide over the treasury until July 15, when tax collections start. Budgets of the city departments already have been trimmed to the bone, but Mayor Murphy said today he feared he would have to send out a general order for further paring. He said he was reluctant to do so, but saw no escape. More than 1,000 men already have been laid off in the department of public works, he said. Seeking a loan from the Ford Company was something of a bit*or the city administration, which has been at loggerheads with the manufacturing company because of charges that graft and fraud were practiced in the administration of the city welfare department, which has expended some $17,000,000 this year in caring for the needy.

livering five-gallon cans of alcohol into an apartment while a third sat in a car. Showing his badge, Purcell ordered the men to submit to arrest and leaped on the running board of the car. The driver started the auto and smashed into a brick wall hurling Purcell to the ground. Purcell and his brother Ray attacked the other two men, but after a scuffle they succeeded in fleeing. Later police arrested Ray Duvall, 700 Ft. Wayne avenue, owner of the car who denied any connection with the alcohol delivery. A can of liquor was found in the car and two others, that had been delivered, were confiscated by police. Purcell was treated by a physician and taken to his home.
