RICH lOWAN IN INSURANCE PLOT IS HELDINSANE Ex-Candidate for Governor Burned Corpse in Car, Is Charge. By United prcßt ADEL. la.. June 25.—Opinions that John W. Smith is “plainly insane" were expressed today by two alienists who examined the former gubernatorial candidate whose mysterious disappearance puzzled lowa authorities for months. The two doctors who examined Smith after lie was jailed here on charges of attempting to defraud a life insurance company of $50,000 w'ere M. E. Witte, superintendent of the hospital for the insane at Clarinda, and George Donohoe, superintendent of the hospital for insane at Cherokee. Drs. Donohoe and Witte said they would question Smith further today and then probably would recommend that he be committed to a hospital for the insane. J. E. Risden, chief of the state bureau of investigation, said no further action would be taken on the criminal charges against the wealthy Perry politicians until the mental examinations were completed. Smith disappeared in February. The truck in which he had left home on a business trip was found burned. A corpse was in the truck. Hie wife buried the corpse, considering it was his. An insurance company later exhumed the body and established that it was not that of Smith, who was a candidate for Governor in 1930. Smith was found Tuesday in a ditch near Garner, la. His hands and feet were bound with wire. He claimed he had been held captive for months by kidnapers, then tossed into the ditch. That night he was brought here and charged with “disappearing" purposely. WOMAN FLIER IS SUED Divorce Is Asked by Husband of Mrs. J. M. Keith -Miller. GANGSTERS NO LONGER IDOLS' Capone Downfall Viewed as Aid for Youth. By Rcripps-HoKar'l Sexcspapcr Alliance WASHINGTON, June 25.—The downfall of A1 Capone, caught in the trap of income tax evasion, should benefit the youth of the country by stripping leading underworld figures of artificial glamour, in the opinion of Elmer Lincoln Irey, chief of the Intelligence unit of the internal revenue bureau. The man who headed the Chicago drive and who has charge of the present anti-gangster offensive in New York said that Capone, as he appeared in court to plead guilty, was anything but a hero. "He has none of the outward appearance of a Jesse James or the bandit leaders of the last generation,” said Irey. “He was a very ordinary looking individual, five feet ten and a half inches tall, weighing 265 pounds and wearing a mustard-seed suit." ~ imk Week end EXCURSIONS EVERY WEEK FROM FRIDAY NOON *TIL MONDAY NIGHT Save time and money by traveling comfortably in fast electric trains.
