‘GREAT TRIP TO GAIN weight: SAYS M'KINNEY City’s Delegate to France Thinks Banquets Came Too Fast. BY LOWELL NUSSBAUM "A wonderful trip, but we’re mighty glad to be home." This was the comment of E. Kirk McKinney, works board president, who with Mrs. McKinney reached Indianapolis at noon today after a five-weeks’ trip to France with mayors of a number of American cities, as guests of the French government. “Everywhere we went we were confronted with rows after rows of bottles of wines, champagne and other liquor, but the first drunk I saw from the time we left was on the train last night after we had left New York for home,” McKinney *aid. Mayors All Temperate “None of the mayors and representatives of mayors was drunk or even hilarious on the trip.” The three weeks spent in France were filled with banquets, speeches and official receptions, he said. “On the boat back, some of the mayors figured out we had spent one solid week eating and drinking and sixty-four hours listening to speeches," McKinney commented. ‘‘There were two banquets every day. That was the worst part o£ the trip. “We spent a large portion of the time visiting various French cities by bus. We always went first to the city hall to meet the mayor. The French city halls are more like palaces than municipal buildings.
Missed Porter Incident “As soon as we would enter the door we would be confronted by large tables containing wines and champagne and we would be expected to make speeches and drink a toast, or rather toasts, to the continuation of American-French friendship. Most of the liquor was more than 100 years old. “Very few of the mayors felt like drinking except at meals. The police chief of Paris told me the French did not consider wine and champagne as having any part in French crime, adding that very little hard liquor is used.” In commenting on the widelypublicized incident in which Mayor John H. Porter of Los Angeles was reported to have left a banquet table when he was offered champagne, McKinney said none of the other mayors knew of the incident until they read of it in the papers next day. Too Many Banquets “Some of the older members of the party were worn out with the continuous round of receptions and banquets, but I guess I have gained some in weight,” McKinney said. Mrs. McKinney, enjoyed the trip greatly, she said, but also was glad to be back home. Mr. and Mrs. McKinney were met at the Union station, with joyous whoops, by their two sons, Kirk Jr., 8, and Bobby, 5. The boys had been living with relatives during their absence. McKinney said he obtained many Interesting ideas in municipal government during the trip, bringing back a traveling bag full of literature. HOW HOT? ASK CRICKET Insect’s Chirps Tell Temperature, Scientists Find. NEW YORK. June 23.—The number of chirps a cricket makes in a minute is an accurate thermometer, provided there is no breeze. Scientists have long known that changing temperatures makes the insects speed up an' 1 slow down their chirping rate, and now H. A. Allard, of the United States department of agriculture, has found that a cricket in a draft chirps faster than one in still atmosphere —exactly thirteen chirps a minute faster in the artificial drafe Mr. Allard created with an electric fan. If no breeze ha dcome up but the temperature had risen three degrees Fahrenheit, the cricket would also have Increased his rate of noisemaking by thirteen chirps a minute.
ATLANTANS ARE SPLIT Wets, Drys Squabble as Mayor Key Returns From Texas. By T'nitfd Press ATLANTA. Ga., June 23.—Atlanta was split into two rival camps today over the return of Mayor James L. Key from France, where he criticised prohibition. Friends of the mayor arranged a gala welcome for his arrival late today. and with several blaring brass bands will escort him to city hall. Opponents of his anti-prohibition utterances, however, protested the “exaggerated" nature of his welcome, charging it was not an expression of esteem for the man, but in approval of his views on liquor. ‘ROASTS’ BOOK CENSORS William Lyon Phelps Decries Library Censorship on Writings. By United Press NEW HAVEN, Conn., June 23. It’s better for children to read trash than nothing at all, Professor William Lyon Phelps of Yale told 3,000 delegates at the second general session of the American Library Association’s fifty-third annual meeting today. He decried library censorship of the public’s books. “It is the library’s province to circulate books" he said, “not censor them or the authors’ lives for the public’s betterment.” RIDESr~HORSff ToTcOAST By United Press PATCHOGUE, L. 1., June 23. Bomcho Charlie Miller, 78, left here on horseback late Monday night for St. Joseph, Mo., and San Francisco. At noon today he was reported leaving Oakdale, L. I. He said he expected the trip to take him about six months or so. He Intends to loaf along and stop to “chat with the boys” whenever the fancy strikes him.
