RELIGIOUS WAR FLARES ANEW IN VERA CRUZ Police, Catholics Clash and Five Die; Federals May Intervene. By United Press VERA CRUZ, Mexico, June 22. An appeal has been sent for federal troops to meet a serious situation today in the town of Huatusco, where police and Catholics clashed in a riot at the funeral of a priest, killed from ambush. The dead Included three policemen and two civilians. Other reports said twenty-five persons had been killed. A representative was sent by the state government to Investigate the clash. He was forced to abandon the effort when his life was threatened. The fighting further Intensified the feeling aroused by the new socalled anti-priest law restricting the number of priests in Vera Cruz state. The courts granted a twoday delay in making the new law effective, pending a decision on an appeal for an injunction against it as unconstitutional. The most authoritative accounts of the Huatusco disturbance said about 2,000 Catholics attended the burial of the priest, Joe De Jesus Cano. When the procession was returning from the cemetery. Catholics asserted, the commander of police and several policemen and a few members of the bakers’ union fired “from an ambush.” Although it was believed they fired into the air, the Incident provoked great excitement and fear, and, the accounts said, the Catholics rushed the ambush. They attacked the police with sticks, stones and knives. In the Air Weather conditions at 9 a. m.: Northeast wind, 2 miles an hour; temperature, 77; barometric pressure, 30.06 at sea level; ceiling, estimated 5,000 ft; visibility, 8 miles; field, good.
