Riley Guild Chapters to Hold Exhibit j State chapters of Riley Hospital> Cheer Guild will hold their annual June breakfast at 11 Thursday morning at the Claypool, when the mother chapter of Indianapolis and all branch organzations will review work of the year. Following the breakfast the program will open with the invocation by the Rev. Guy O. Carpenter, pastor of the Irvington Methodist Episcopal church, followed by greetings from the Riley hospital bsl Miss Mary E. Heckard, superin- j tendent of nurses. Dr. Carleton B. McCulloch will speak on “Reminiscenses of James Whitcomb Riley,” and James E. Fisher, Indiana district governor of Kiwanis international will speak on “Kiwanis at Riley Hospital.” Mrs. Andrew J. Porter, founder and auxiliary secretary of the organization, will introduce the chapters. Mrs. Charles G D. Hogate. president, will preside. Tour to Ilosptia) Following the program opportunity will be given to visit the hospital. Mrs. Warren C. Harrell is 1 in charge of tranportation. An exhibit of chapter work will be arranged in Parlor B at the Claypool, where chapter members may confer with their auxiliary secretaries The Riley Hospital Cheer Guild was organized in April, 1924, with the following objectives, as embodied in the constitution, “to furnish entertainment for the children of the James Whitcomb Riley hospital, and to assist in every possible} way the James Whitcomb Riley Memorial Association.” In June of the same year the first auxiliary chapter, “Little Orphant Annie,” was formed in West Indianapolis by a Sunday school organization, to co-operate with the parent chapter. Soon other local chapters formed ,and in October the first state chapter, “Old Brandywine,” was formed in Shelby county, followed by many others. Each of the groups was named from one of Riley's poems. At the present time there are sixty chapters ; in Marion county and thirty-six i distributed over the state. Contribute Toys, Books The auxiliary members sew, contribute toys and books, clothing and money for surgical equipment to the parent group for work at the hospital. Other city organizations, besides those directly connected with the guild, including business and professional women’s clubs, literary clubs, sewing clubs, church societies and sororities, contribute to the work. There are approximately 1,700 members in the guild, which has as its aim at least one chapter in each county in Indiana. A quarterly bulletin is published by the auxiliary secretary to help keep the mother guild and the branch units in close touch with each other. Local Couple on Honeymoon After Wedding The marriage of Miss Viola Laurenchia Alter, daughter of Mrs. John H. Alter, 3908 Rookwood avenue, and Galvin Ogle Douglass, took place Wednesday afternoon at St. Joan of Arc parish house, the Rev. Joseph Smith officiated. The bride was attended by her j sister. Miss Beatrice Marie Alter, | who wore a pink French organdy frock and Italian lace straw picture hat and carried Butterfly roses. George Douglass was his brother’s best man. The bride’s gown was of Chantilly ; lace over orchid, and she wore an a orchid picture hat of Italian braid, ; and corsage of orchids. Following a bridal diner at the Marott, Mr. and Mrs. Douglass left for a short honeymoon. They will be at home at 2812 Washington : boulevard after June 20. Old Glory Society Convention Well Attended at Franklin
Members of Old Glory Society, Children of the American Revolution of Indianapolis, were well represented at the state convention, which opened this morning in Franklin, with the Deborah chapter of Franklin as host. Approximately 125 delegates from over the state were expected to register by this afternoon. Mary Ellen Voyles, junior president of the local group, and Betty Kallean will be pages. Camp Fire Girls’ Activities
Camp will open Sunday, June 14, at McCormick’s Creek canyon, near Spencer, Ind., with Miss Cora Puckett of Hornell, New York, directing. Mrs. Mary Heagy will assist her. Councillors are Miss Louise Reiter, handcraft; Miss Ruth Pahud, swimming; Miss Ruth Gordon Scott, assistant in swimming and camp craft; Kathleen Klaiber, dramatics; Miss Clara Moore, nature; Mrs. Katherine Burns, trained nurse; Barbara Stelle and- Betty Craig, junior councillors. The cook has not yet been decided upon. There are many new features at camp this year. For hiking there are six different trails with some of the lovliest scenery, rocks, flowers and natural wonders in Indiana. There are all sorts of games, including volley ball, baseball, tennis and archery. Swmiming will be taught by two excellent teachers, one assistant, and three life guards. There will be all kinds of handcraft, including lessons in basket weaving, glorified glass, spatter printing and sewing. Dramatics and stunts will be held every night. Nature hikes, star hikes and many kinds of nature work will be features. Excellent food will be served. Four groups of School 54, with Mrs. Carl Anderson, Mrs. Nelle Clinton, Mrs. G. B. Ludwig and Mrs. Rlaph Stratman, guardians, held a picnic for girls and mothers at Brookside park Wednesday afternoon. After lunch a council fire was held. Honor beads were awarded. Akipsaya group of West Newton, Ind., with Miss Sophia Yeager, guardian, hiked to the country home of their assistant guardian for their first ceremonial meeting. After the meeting the girls toasted marshmallows. They plan to give a play soon. They also have arranged a treasure hunt to which they are inviting all the Indianapolis Camp Fire Girls. War Mothers to Meet With Church Group Marion county chapter, American War Mothers, and the Women’s Auxiliary of St. Paul’s Episcopal church will hold a joint meeting in the Florentine room at the Claypool, at 2 Thursday afternoon. Alumni Club of Notre Dame to Hold Dance Indianapolis Club of Notre Dama will hold a mid-year dance June 22 at the Trees for members, alumni members and friends. W. Lawrence Sexton and Robert N, Leppert are co-chairmen of arrangements. This mid-year dance will be an annual feature of the organization's social activities, with the annual Christmas dinner dance.
