SCIENCE FINDS WAY TO TREAT POISON VICTIMS Operation Can Save Lives of Persons Taking Bichloride. By Science Service PHILADELPHIA. June 12.—An operation which will save the lives of persons who have swallowed the deadly poison, bichloride of mercury was described by Dr. Samuel Berger of Cleveland, at the meeting here today of the American Medical Association. The operation is called cecostomy and consists of an opening into the cecum, which is a sort of dilated pouch into which open the large and small intestine and the appendix. Dr. Berger and associates, Drs. H. S. Applebaum and A. M. Young, examined carelully the bodies of persons who had died by poisoning with bichloride of mercy. They found that gangrene developed in the lower intestine in a large percentage of patients who lived beyond the first twenty-four hours after swallowing the poison. This gangrene war, responsible for the deaths of these patients. Averts Gangrene Development The treatment which Dr. Berger and associates then instituted consisted of a constant flushing of the gastro-intestinal system with water through the opening made by the cecostomy operation. This flushing interrupts the passage of the poison from the colon to the stomach and averts the development of gangrene. The procedure is only successful when performed within a few hours I after the poison has been swallowed,; Dr. Berger emphasized. Patients in whom it was carried out after two days or more all died. X-ray treatment relieves obstruction of the lower opening of the j 6tomach in new-born infants, Dr. Orville Barbour of Peoria, 111., told members of the association. He reported that the method was successfully used in thirty-three cases during the last five years. In only four it was unsuccessful. This condition, known by the medical term of pyloric stenosis, is extremely serious. The obstruction prevents the food from passing through the infant’s alimentary tract in the normal way and severe vomiting occurs. X-Ray Effective Baby Treatment Special diets, drugs and surgical operation to remove the obstruction have all been found effective methods of relieving the condition in many cases. The advantage of the new method which employs X- | rays is the saving of time. The radiation takes effect within tw r enty-four hours if it is effective ! at all, whereas if medical treatment i is tried it may require a week or two to be effective. By that time, if it is not effective, the child may be so weakened that he can not stand an operation, if one is considered necessary. Dr. Barbour and associates discovered the effects of the X-rays accidentally. They were making an X-ray photograph preparatory to an operation when they noticed that after the exposure to the rays, the vomiting ceased. This cessation was temporary at first, but became permanent in response to subsequent application of the X-rays. ATLANTIC'S ICEBERG CROP FOUND SCANTY Fifteen Instead of Usual Scores Reported by Scientist. By Science Service WASHINGTON, June 12.—Fifteen icebergs, instead of the usual scores or even hundreds, represent the total crop of 1931 to date in the waters off the northern coast of North America. Dr. Alav Mosby, Norwegian oceanographer now cruising on the U. S. S. General Greene to study icebergs in the waters off Newfoundland, wired today that during May only thirteen icebergs had been seen south of Newfoundland, and only one during each of the preceding two months. None of this scanty crop got as far south as the usual steamer tracks. The farthest south was the forty-sixth parallel of latitude, fully three degrees north of the normal limit for this time of year. FIND RADIUM DEPOSIT Tests Plnce Value of Ore at Nearly SB,GOO a Ton. Hyde, secretary of agriculture, at a dinner in Manufacturers’ building at state fairground June 25, will be broadcast over WKFB and WFBM, E. J. Barker, secretary of the state agriculture board said today. Barker also said the board is arranging a sixteen-place press box, three broadcasting booths, and telephone and telegraph connections at the new grandstand at the fairground.

CRISSEY United Press Staff Correspondent PRESCOTT, Ariz., June 12.—A bleaming mass of reptiles writhed in a special pit today as members of the Smoki clan prepared for a thrilling snake dance here Sunday, in which priests will use the ‘‘little brothers of the underworld” in asking the gods for rain. Most spectacular of all the unusual ceremonies practiced in Arizona is the rain prayer of the Smoki people and, strangely enough, the principals are white 1 men who have studied and learned much from the Indians. Once each year the Smoki ceremonial is staged, during which various phases of Indian rituals are produced. There are many feird dances, but the snake dance, taken from the snake clan of the Hopi tribe, is the one which gives the spectators cold shivers. Puts Snake in Mouth Keeping time to the beat of tomtoms, the snake priests start the dance by passing in single file j around a plaza, during which a snake is handed to each, and soon all have them dangling and writh- j ing from their hands and arms. As the ceremony progresses, the \ chant of other priests and the beat 1 of the drums grow louder, and as though by a signal each of the snake priests places the snake he is: carrying in his mouth as proof that the snake is indeed his “little brother.” Form Cornmeal Circle From time to time one snake is dropped and another taken up until J finally the snake priests are facing j the antelope priests with one or more snakes dangling from hands and arms. Meantime, women of the clan have spread a circle of sacred cornmeal on the ground and the priests dance around until a circle about the cornmeal circle is formed. The two orders of priests, in pairs, circle the cornmeal outline, each grasping a part of the snake of the priest ahead until a chain of snakes! and men is formed.
