belongings out of the great stone palace into the tiny bachelor flat he continued to keep during his long term of office. His exact plans are unknown, but he is understood to favor a return to the quiet of the senate as soon as a seat can be vacated for him. He was married only recently. The retiring president leaves office with probably the greatest popularity of any occupant of the Elysee. Genial, smiling and an ardent traveler, he conquered Frenchmen as few public figures have done. His popularity is as great as that of Raymond Poincare, and together they stand among the most esteemed of contemporary Frenchmen to their fellows. Throughout his career, Doumergue has been dogged by the figure 13. He was elected on the thirteenth day of the thirteenth legislature on May 13, 1924, and on May 1913, 1931, his successor, the thirteenth president, was elected to take office June 13. Contrasting with the quiet Doumergue household, Doumer is moving his family into the Elysee, where there will be frequently, as visitors, come his band of granchildren, the offspring of his four sons killed in the war. Doumer’s troubles will start. Saturday when, in accordance with tradition, Premier Pierre Laval will offer the resignation of the cabinet. It is understood that Doumer will ask Laval to carry on.

In this connection the fact that Senator William E. Borah is breaking his custom of spending the summer here and is now on his way

west has provoked much speculation. Already Borah has Indicated he regards the Hcover administration as being out of step with the sentiment of the west. There is concern among Republican regulars that after grazing in western fields all summer, he will come back next fall with fire in his eye. Borah carried a good share of the campaigning load for Mr. Hoover in 1928 and there is some question as to whether he will take the stump again next year. Asked about this recently he made the cryptic reply that he might be pretty tired and
