VATICAN-ITALY DISPUTE NEARS PEACEFUL END Officials of Both States Believed Sure to Quit After Settlement. BY THOMAS B. MORGAN Unit'd Prew Staff Corr'tnondent ROME, June 11.—The controversy between the Vatican and the Italian government was regarded as practically settled today, although formal conclusion of negotiations had not been reached. Resignations of several high officials in the Vatican and the government were expected to take place following the settlement of the controversy. Cardinal Pacelli, papal secretary of state, who has been instrumental in the negotiations, will resign, one unconfirmed report said. It was believed certain that a number of heads most likely would be removed as soon as a settlement is reached, although in some cases promotion may precede removal from the scene of the controversy. This procedure is traditional. Thus, it is understood that Mgr. Pizzardo. assistant secretary of state at the Vatican, who already has resigned, may be named either apostolic delegate at Washington or made a cardinal. Pizzardo resigned as assistant general of the Azione Cattolica, which Italy, in reply to ihe Vatican's protests of antiCatholic demonstrations, charged with political activities in alleged violation of the concordat. The government's reply also demanded the resignation of Mgr. Pizzardo on the ground that he was not an Italian, but a subject of the Vatican state, of w’hich Pope Pius XT is head. Other reports, unconfirmed, said that the papal nuncio to Italy, Mgr. Francesco Borgongini-Duca, would resign, and that the Italian ambassador to the Vatican, Count de Vccchie, would quit. Their action, however, would not be taken until the controversy had definitely been settled.

No longer would bank vaults be ravaged and merchants terrorized by banditry if their invention could be installed universally, believe J. A. Brown and Fred Seitz, of 3520 Carrollton avenue, designers of the safety tower pictured above. It literally is a bullet-proof fortress to be set up at a point in a store or bank commanding views of all portions of the interior. Inside would be stationed a guard with access to police alarms, weapons and immune from any attack with bandit guns. clared Arthur Reynolds, chairman of the Continental Illinois Bank and Trust Company, a billion dollar institution. “Some of the strongest neighborhood banks in Chicago have been subjected to heavy withdrawals.” he said, “but conditions appear to be unproving, uneasiness is subsiding and public confidence in the banking situation is being restored.” Six banks, which failed to open Wednesday, brought to a total of twenty-four the number of neighborhood institutions closed inside the city since unrest began spreading Monday during excitement attendant to consolidation of four large loop bancs into two. Plans already were under way today to reopen some of the closed banks, and officials of almost all of them already had isssued assurances that whether the banks reopened or not, depositors would not lose anything. The banks closed Wednesday had total deposits of about $20,000,000. Those closed the previous day had total deposits of about $13,000,000.
