TELEVISION HAS ‘arrived: radio SHOWJEVEALS Small, Inexpensive Sets Are Ready for Homes, Dealers Announce.' By United Press CHICAGO. June 9.—The newest developments in radio were presented by the country's ‘billion-dol-lar’ radio industry today in one of the most lavish displays ever shown. Exhibits worth more than $1,000,000 in a half dozen of Chicago’s leading hotels showed the latest in console sets, midget sets, cabinets, television sets, tubes, antennae, and even Iceless ice boxes, electric irons and alarm clocks. The occasion is the fifth annual trade show and the seventh annual convention of the Radio Manufacturers* Association. Twenty-five thousand dealers and manufacturers are here to explain their exhibits. The interest that centers around television displays is an important feature of the Show. It is evident that the industry is preparing for the Introduction of television in the home. “This fall and winter should see television in the ‘crystal stage’ through which the sound receiver passed ten years ago,” said Bond Geddes, the association’s executive vice-president. Among the television sets on display were several that show pictures two feet square for home reception. Manufacturers predicted these will be used widely within the next twelve months. The manufacturers believe the public desires radio receiving sets disguised and numerous exhibits showed models of sets built into grandfather clocks, electric clocks with the tuning controls placed unobtrusively at the side or in front and covered with a sliding panel. The speaker is hidden at the top. GENERAL WEYGAND TO GET COVETED HONOR * Academy of France Seat to Be Awarded Marshal Foch’s Protege. By United Press PARIS, June 9. —The Academy of France, which has fixed Thursday for elections to fill two vacant chairs in the great company of immortals, has announced that General Max D. Weygand, tiny protege of the late Marshal Ferdinand Foch, will be unopposed for election to the chair vacated by the death of Marshal Joseph Joffre. For the second chair, that of the late Georges De Porto Riche, there will be competition between five prominent figures in the field of letters. It is tradition that a soldier follows a soldier and a writer must follow a writer. Pierre Benoit, who won the academy’s grand prix in 1919 for his “Atlantide”; Abel Bonnard, grand prix winner in 1924; Count De Fels, Gustave Guiche and Augustine Thierry are disputing the election. Benoit’s chances are considered best. School Bonds Sold By Times Special SHERIDAN, Ind., June B.—Theodore Pettijohn, trustee of Adams township, has sold a $40,000 bond issue to the Union Trust Company of Indianapolis for par, accrued interest, and a premium of S2OO. This was the only bid submitted. The money will be used to complete the new high school building in Sheridan.
