DEATH CLAIMS JERRY KINNEY, POLICE CHIEF Department Head Passes, After Long Illness, in St. Francis Hospital. (Continued from Page 1) members of his family that he hack met with a slight mishap and it was not until the afternoon papers were delivered at the home that his relatives knew Kinney had faced death or critical injury. Kinney's love for his mother and his wife, Mrs. Grace Kinney, who died in 1900, after but a few years of married life, were outstanding in his life. His mother, Mrs. Elizabeth Kinney, died in 1924. Kinney’s father, Cornelius Kinney, died in 1914. Returned to Old Home Following the death of his wife, Li3iney returned to the old home on St. Clair street and lived with ms mother and brother, William. He often said he never would move, “because that is home.” Mayor Sullivan went to the hospital Sunday to see Kinney and was admitted to the room. Although Kinney did not speak, he gripped Sullivan’s hand and his eyes showed his pleasure at the visit. A few days before, Kinney asked Dr. Frank Dowd, police surgeon, who attended him, to arrange with Sullivan for his resignation, so “some other fellow can step in there while I’m sick.” And Sullivan, through Dowd, sent back the word: “No chance, Jerry. You’ll stay there until you’re well and return to your post.” Worried Over Murder While he lay in the hospital, one of the most brutal murders of recent police history was perpetrated. Lafayette Jackson, head of the Standard groceries, was wounded mortally by bandits. The hospital order was that no word of this reach Kinney. Friends say, though, that by some manner the word reached the police chief and he worried over the matter until his death. Kinney was active in the Knights of Columbus, the Elks, and the Ancient Order of Hibernians. With the passing of Kinney, several men will be considered by city officials as successors, it was reported at the city hall and police headquarters. Those mentioned for the post are Fred Simon, detective chief; Major Herbert Fletcher, acting chief; Captain Lewis Johnson, head of the traffic department, and Captain Otto Ray. State police today offered to participate in the last rites for Kinney. Births Girls David and Mildred Parrel, 411 North Oakland. Auore.v and Vera Brown. 218 East Walnut.
