VOICES HOOVER JOB PLEA IN ROADDEMAND $15,150 Bond Issue Is Asked on Behalf of Perry Township. President Hoover’s plea to aid the unemployment was invoked today as an argument in favor of Perry township issuing $15,150 worth of bonds to build a two and one-half-mile gravel road at the south end cl Capitol avenue from Southern to Troy avenues. The road would be called the Henry Stump road and Stump himself voiced the Hoover plea. Appearing before the state tax board, where the bond issue plan had been taken on appeal, Stump tearfully told of the suffering of families of unemployed in Marion county and asserted his proposed bond issue would aid in solving the problem. “Gentlemen,” he addressed the tax commissioners in a final effort, “if you do not grant this bond issue you are refusing the plea of the President of the United States.” Denies Sub-Division Claim Previously he had asserted that objection to the road was made by well-to-do Perry township landowners, and said if they were familar with the suffering of the unemployed they could not be so heartless. Besides, he pointed out, the difference in mileage now paid for school hack transportation would more than recompense the cost of construction. Questioned regarding it being a possible sub-division promotion by Phil Zoercher, veteran tax board member, Stump denied that such was the case. This was reinforced by an opinion from Mrs. Catherine Stout, one of the small home owners, who asserted that their place now is without road facilities. Refused Three Years Ago Mrs. P. C. Smith, another homeowner in the vicinity, said she was against building the road, but would surrender her opinion if the matter is settled immediately. “I have been waiting three years to find out whether or not this road is going to bs built so that I will know where to put up my fences,” she said. “I’d like to see it settled so I can settle down on my land.” Opinions pro and con also were advanced for a Perry township bond issue of $17,000 for construction of the George Kornbroke road, which is from Sherman drive to the Shelbyville road. Both road bond issues were refused by the tax board about three years ago. Refusal was based on the contention that there are sufficient roads in the territories now and that the new construction is unnecessary. Crime Solved!
By United Brett CHICAGO, June B.—The chances are 97 to 3 that a boy who is taught to blow a horn won’t grow up to be a safe blower, according to statistics compiled by Otto B. Heaton, Columbus, 0., president of the National Association of Music Merchants. “We have discovered that fewer than 3 per cent of the criminals In prisons can play musical instruments,” Heaton told the annual musical industries convention which opened here today. “On the other hand,” he said, “our statistics show that 90 per cent of the honor graduates in high schools and colleges are musicians. ’’The solution then of our national crime problem is clear.”
