Prelims to Open Meet Joe Sivak of Butler Defends Mile Crown in Chicago Event. BY GEORGE KIRKSEY United Press Staff Correspondent CHICAGO, June 5-rDominatlng the field of 334 picked stars entered from seventy-five colleges from coast to coast, Southern California’s track and field team was an overwhelming favorite to put the finishing touches on the greatest twoyear Tecord in history in the National Collegiate Athletic Association meet today and Saturday at Stagg field. The withdrawal of all but one member of the Stanford team virtually has clinched the title for the Trojans. Southern California won las: year’s meet with 55 27-70 points and if all the members of the team perform up to expectations the Trojans will set anew high point total, eclipsing the present high score of 72 points made by Stanford in 1928. First Two-Time Winner Since victory for Southern California is practically a foregone conclusion, it will be the first time since the N. C A. A. meet was established in 1921 that any school has been able to win the title two years in succession. The Trojans already have successfully defended their I. C. A. A. A. A. title, winning at Philadelphia last week. Trials in eleven of the fifteen events were scheduled for today, beginning at 3 p. m. Preliminaries were carded in the two hurdle races, the 100, 220, 440 and 880, and in all the field events except the pole vault and high jump. Six Champs Return Six champions have returned to defend their titles. They are Frank Wykoff, Southern California, 100yard dash; Joe Sivak, Butler, mile; Jim Stewart, Southern California, high jump; Ed Gordon, lowa, broad Jump; Tom Warne, Northwestern, pole-vault, and Kenneth Churchill. California, javelin. Lee Sentman, Illinois, 220-yard low hurdle champion, will not compete because of impending examinations. With Sentman out, Jack Keller, Ohio State, was favored to win both hurdle races, with Hatfield of Indiana a strong contender.

One of these days you may pick up the paper and read “Berly Blanks Cards.” About that time, there is just a chance that Branch Rickey, the Cardinals' strategist and founder of the St. Louis chain store baseball system, will move to Gravey Heaven, N. M., and take up intensive farming. It was Mr. Rickey who let John Chambers Berly escape from the Cardinals’ farm at Rochester and into the waiting arms of John McGraw of the Giants. Beryl, whose fine pitching to date has caused McGraw to place him among the six regular workers, is one of those pitchers who has been kicked around for several years in the minors. McGraw scouted him personally last year at Rochester and purchased him for a fairly fancy price. During 1930 he took part in thirty games, winning sixteen and losing eight and allowing the visiting fire laddies 2.49 runs per game. Berly is five feet eleven. inches tall and weighs 185 pounds. IRISH CAPTAINS NAMED Oscar Barry and Fred Biomeyer were elected Thursday to captain the 1932 Cathedral high school track team. Charles Lee was named honorary captain of the 1931 squad. Monograms were awarded Bloemeyer, Collier, Barry, Connor, Lee, Burns, Bevan, Lynch, Steckley, Evans and Welch. Bob Collier, sophomore, won the medal for scoring the most points this season. ASHLEY NAMED PILOT By United Press CHICAGO, June s.—Harry Ashley of Frankfort, Ind., has been elected captain of the University of Chicago basketball team for 1932. Ashley has been a regular guard on the Maroon team for two years.
