— Your Child Don’t Interrupt Your Child When He Is Concentrating
BY OLIVE ROBERTS BARTON, If parents would raise the curtain and look behind the scenes of their children’s minds, I don’t believe they would get so impatient. For half the things we scold them for are virtues—oh, no, not virtues, that’s such a pale word—but valuable assets of the highest order. 'I get so tired of telling Johnny things,’’ says his mother. “He doesn't pay any attention. I do wish I could teach him to concentrate.” If she could step back stage in that young mind she would probably discover something surprising. The very thing that she complains about his lacking, is the very quality that he has. It is because he has that rare faculty of keeping his mind, on ope thing at a time that she finds difficulty in diverting him to pay attention to her. If she were clever, she would not try to get his attention away from the thing he is concentrating on at the time unless it was absolutely necessary For once the power of losing one’s self completely in one task is gone, or let us be technical and say impulse, it is Just one of those things we don’t get back. We get older and older and each year that power of forgetting the world in the one thing we are trying to do, gets more difficult. What makes it difficult? Interruption, or Just as bad, fear of interruption. Why is it that people who are doing the biggest, hardest mental work are apt to be absent-minded about that useful trick of discarding everything but the thing at hand? Their big work engrosses them. Usually they are irritable when Interrupted. And aren’t all of us? Wouldn’t Johnny’s own mother be cross if the telephone rang when she was carefully measuring out the Ingredients for her prize cake? I don’t say that we can allow the children to go on continually without heeding things we are saying, orders, directions, advice, or

requests. That would mean chaos indeed. But I do think that we invade their privacy of thought and interest too often and too rudely. In other words, we will get better results if we can select moments when they are not lost in another world and jerk them back to our bidding. They will listen then and remember. We’d have less cause to say that Johnny doesn’t pay attention.
