U. $, OFFICIALS POOR PROPHETS FOR BUSINESS Hoover and H[s Aids Are! Little Wiser Than Average Man on Future. BY RAYMOND CLAPPER L'nffed Prets Staff Correspondent WASHINGTON, May 28.—Twice ! within a week the White House has j indicated It detected favorable factors in the business situation. But there were no dogmatic predictions in either instance, because •hrough disheartening experience the administration has learned that in economic prophecy it is little wiser than the average man. President Herbert Hoover, numerous of his cabinet members, Sena- j tor James E. Watson (Rep., Ind.) j and other Republican spokesmen have been criticised for indulging! m economic prophecy which time has proved erroneous. Therefore, the current restraint, | in contrast with an earlier disposition to predict a general recovery ; within a fixed period, carries some of the confidence which comes from 1 understatement rather than over-' statement. The administration is convinced that the bottom of the curve has been reached and that a slow climb is in sight. It was exactly such a situation which caused President Hoover last year to predict recovery would soon be well under way, w’hen the curve, which had started up, suddenly broke and went down farther than it had during the previous nine months of the depression. The fact is, as any one can dis- J cover by talking with two or three • of the best informed government officials. that they are about like the average w’ell-informcd citizen. They follow the market reports and the trade statistics and try to figure out hopefully w’hat is going j on. They have little information | which any w'ell informed New York ! banking house does not have or can not get by half a dozen telephone i calls.
