SIFT CHARGE OF ‘PULL’ PROMISE IN JURY QUIZ Activities of Sales Group in Promotion Scheme Being Told. Grand jury probe Into activities of officers and sales promoters of the Indiana Business Men’s Association was launched today with more than a dozen witnesses testifying. Recent resumption of activities of the association have been under investigation by The Times, the Better Busienss Bureau and the Indianapolis Bar Association. Superior court judges became irate over alleged statements of promoters after they learned, that in phone and personal conversations salesmen had indicated their power with the courts and mentioned one of their group as often being selected as judge pro tern. The outfit now is headed by Seldon Blumenfeld. an attorney with offices in the Circle Tower building. Some of the phone calls are reported to be made from his office and others from another location in Indianapolis. The group is trying to sell, to small business houses, advertising in a commercial manual, subscriptions for which have been reported sold to about 150 Indianapolis piersens. Two attorneys previously headed the organization. It was uncovered by The Times last fall and operations were stopped temporarily. Both men withdrew after reports of the activities of salesmen were exposed by The Times. Another attorney withdrew after he drew the ire of Federal Judge Robert C. Baltzell. In personal conversations representatives of the company have a veiled manner of intimating that they can be of aid to subscribers of advertisements in the book. They also offer business and legal service. INJURIES PROVE FATAL Mrs. Nora Lilly, 72, Was Hurt in Crash 5 Years Ago. In the Cotton Markets

(Bv Thomson' 8c McKinnon) NEW YORK, May 27.—The cotton market was better in tone and in price this morning. English cables had something to do with it, and the government as well as private authorities were sponsors for reports of unfavorable weather for the week. We think the past week was far more favorable than otherwise. After reaching within a few points of Tuesday’s high level of prices, the buying slackened materially and subsequent selling orders found purchasers cautious and unwilling to make anything but small commitments. At noon December contracts stood at 927. The previous high and low having been 935 and 919 respectively. The December contracts sold as low as 9.05 in the middle of the afternoon. With prices lowest for years, we are of the opinion that general conditions are writing cotton prices to a greater extent than ever before. The month of May, the most important on the calendar, has not been of the best. We go into June with the necessity of good weather urgent if we are to harvest an avergae crop.

In the Stock Market

(Bv Thomson & McKinnon) NEW YORK, May 27.—Whatever nervousness the short interest may have felt, it wa* not of long duration, judging by the action of the market. After an early show of firmness, stocks turned quite weak. The early unsettlement was attributed largely to the decline in the rails. The rail shares doubtless reflected disappointment over the refusal of the I. C. €. to act of its own accord in the matter of rate adjustments. Probably contributing to the discouragement over the railroad situation as much as anything were the large number of unfavorable earnings reports released today. The margin of improvement for April over March is proving to be less than expected. •When of course the general commercial piicture is painted by the mid-week statistics and trade reviews, was not at all promising. However, much sentiment would like to be influenced b ythe more optimistic views of various industiral and financial leaders, it evidently cannot escape the more tangible factors of the depressed business situation. Whatever confidence may be felt in our eventual recovery, it is not being acted upon. Buying px>wer in the security market is most indifferent. At least, it is not sufficient to counteract the pressure which is so persistent. Regardless of what may be behind this pressure, there is no indication in the market that it has run it scourse.
