U. S. TAX ON GASOLINE WILL BE PROPOSED Mellon Also Would Restore Federal Sales Levy on Automobiles. BY THOMAS L. STOKES United Press Staff Correspondent WASHINGTON, May 26.—A federal tax on gasoline and restoration of the federal sales tax on automobiles are being considered by Treasury Secretary Andrew Mellon and his experts, in formulating a long-time program to meet dwindling revenues and increasing cost of government. Mellon expects to submit his program to congress in 1932 after the election. He realizes neither would sponsor any tax increase on the eve of a national election. New tax plan proposals already have stirred up controversy over Mellon’s suggestion that more people should pay income taxes, and thus the burden on the average taxpayer be increased. This would be done by redoing or eliminating present exemptions. “Lowering exemptions and taxing of the smaller incomes is on the same principle as the lowering of wages, Senator William Borah still further the purchasing power of the great body of people.” Most members of congress are oposed to any tax increase. Senator James Couzens (Rep., Mich) is an exception. Taxes must be increased, but he urges that the increases be applied to the wealthy. Couzens, many times a millionaire, recommended a gift tax, an increase on the estate tax, and increased surtaxes on the rich. YEAH, HE'S WELCOME Alfonso Can Come Home If He Will Be Good. Says Spaniard. By United Prrgg PARIS, May 26.—Alfonso XIII, exiled king of Spain, could return to his country If he would refrain from anti-Rcpublican political activities, Alejandro Lerroux, Spanish republican foreign minister, said today. “I see no objection to Alfonso’s living in Spain,” Lerroux commented, ‘but I would prefer he lived further away, perhaps at the north pole, let us say.”
Yo u’H call Pontiac the happy medium . • . quality you won’t do without, at a cost you can easily pay
It isn’t difficult to learn what most people want in a motor car. We all want pretty much the same fine qualities—and we want them at a moderate price. You will find this combination in the Pontiac that fine General Motors car. Thus, if it’s a damp day when you first drive a Pontiac you will notice how snug and dry it is inside. The same with heat, cold and traffic noise—because Pontiac’s fine Fisher bodies are tightly insulated. Appreciating the comfortable seats, you will remark also the absence of road shocks. This is due to hydraulic shock absorbers and rubber cushioning at 43 points in the chassis. When you first step inside the Pontiac you will see something unusual—genuine mohair or whipcord

upholstery in the closed cars; fin# leathers in open models. Even though you feel that most cars have satisfactory engines, you will be surprised at the smoothness with which Pontiac’s engine does its work. As you drive you will admire the quick pick-up and power of that big, easy-working motor. Good looks? Smartness? We can leave the proof to remarks you will hear and the approving glances you will see! (Bodies by Fisher.) Possibly we are prejudiced yet owners praise this car more than we would dare to. The values they have discovered will be clear to you once you have driven the Pontiac. Why not do that! Any Oakland-Pontiac dealer will arrange a demonstration.
