VIVIAN GORDON KILLED IN CAR, DRIVER ADMITS Grewsome Strangling Story Told N. Y. Police by Death Auto Chauffeur. /®.V United Press : NEW YORK, May 25.—Conles*ion of the chauffeur of the automobile in which Vivian Gordon tode to her death left, police said today, only the establishment of a motive for the crime to complete the solution of one of New York’s most sensational murders. After being questioned fifteen hours, Harry Schlitten, alia Harvey, confessed he drove the car in which the red-haired woman was strangled. He named Harry Stein as the actual killer, but said Samuel Greenberg, alias Greenhauer. helped put a clothesline around her neck and strangle her. Stein already is indicted for the killing, and Greenberg will be arraigned today. Schlitten and Izzy Lewies, alias English, are to be held as material witnesses. Confession Summarized Schlitten, according to police, told a complete story, the chiefs points of which were: 1. Mis Gordon was persuaded to get into the automobile because she was told Greenberg had $250,000 worth of mneut diamonds, of which ihe wished to rob him. 2. The spot for the murder was picked in advance by Stein. 3. After a short drive in the car, Stein threw her to the floor of the tonneau and, making a running noose in the clothesline, slipped it around her neck. She struggled and Greenberg and Stein kicked her in the face to silence her. “She cackled just once,” said the Confession. 4. The body was thrown' o’ut in Van Cortland park, and one of Miss Gordon's slippers was found in the car after the three men drove away, they threw It out about 100 yards from the body. 5. Jewelry and a mink coat were taken off Miss Gordon, the sale of which furnished the money Stein gave Schlitten for driving the car. Daughter Killed Self Finding of the woman's body started a sensational series of events. Shortly afterward her 16-year-old daughter. Benita. Blschoff, committed suicide in Audubon. N. J., where she lived with Miss Gordon's divorced husband. The. girl left diaries explaining she thought her mother was a beautiful dancer, and was unable to endure the shame she felt in learning otherwise. Jn some quarters here it was charged that Miss Gordon was killed because she had offered to testify against police in Commissioner Samuel Seabury’s investigation of the magistrates’ courts. Police Commissioner Mulrooney ridiculed the statement at the time. He said Miss Gordon had an unsavoftr reputation; was a petty black mailer and also kept a list of girls whom she supplied for gay parties. Schlitten said he was ignorant of the motive of the killings and Mulrooney admitted police themselves had not finished working out that phase of the case. Police Feel Vindicated Mulrooney called the obtaining of the confession “one of the best pieces of detective work in years.” Mayor James J. Walker, who went to police headquarters when Mulrooney announced Schlitten's confession, declared it might be well to go back and look at the newspaper stories published right after the murder. I think in justice to the police department those stories should be read again in the light of this confession.” Authorities indicated Schlitten would receive immunity for turning State's evidence.
