PINCHOT FIGHT IS THREAT TO HOOVERS HOLD Battle With Senate Over Utilties May Determine Delegation Control. By Scrippi-floicard Newspaper Alliance WASHINGTON, May 21.—The dramatic struggle Governor Gifford Ptnchot is waging in Pennsylvania, against a hostile state senate which refuses to agree with his plan for regulation of public utilities, is being watched with concern by conservative Republican leaders here. Many of them see in it a threat by Pinchot against Herbert Hoover for control of the Pennsylvania delegation to the next Republican national convention. Chairman Is Denounced President Hoover invited Edwaid Martin, Republican state chairman, to spend a night at the White House recently to discuss Pinchot’s activities and their possible ramifications. Martin, a conservative Republican, helped Pinchot in his campaign, but since then he has been denounced by the Governor as the legislative representative of the utilities. In a speech in "Martin’s home town the day following his visit to the White House, Pinchot accused him of “taking orders” from the utilities. Martin, it is understood, assured President Hoover that the majority of the Pennsylvanians’ at the next convention would be for him, but he included a proviso to the effect that if there is a state contest for all delegates, Pinchot’s strength will be greater. Pinchot Threatens Veto Such a contest is more than a probability. The legislature has failed to pass a congressional redistricting bill and although it is understood a compromise measure will be agreed upon before the legislature adjourns, Governor Pinchot threatens to veto the measure. This will throw all contests for convention delegates into a statewide fight where Pinchot twice has been able to defeat his organized opponents. Pennsylvania’s delegation to the next national convention will total seventy-two. CHINA TROUBLE GAINS Serious Threat to Central Regime Seen in New Uprisings. By United Press SHANGHAI. China, May 21. Fighting between revolutionary forces in north-central China and government troops was reported today to have broken out along the Peiping-Hankow railway. Spread of insurgent movements to north China was regarded as a serious threat to the authority of the central government at Nanking, already harassed by open rebellion in the south.

Belasco Knew How to Pick 'Em; Lifted Many Stars to Heavens
(This is sas of s series sf stories tefllnr la dramatic fashion the drams that was the life of David Belasco.) BY GILBERT SWAN. NEA Service Writer ON the afternoon that David Belasco bade his resigned farewell to this world, threo men sat in a cubby-hole reached by means of a typical stage alley In Forty-fourth street. A crowd that knew of the maestro’s death packed the theater, many of them drawn by a morbid curiosity concerning the effect the news would have upon the players. But just beyond the entrance way marked with the sign- “stage door," three musketeers of the old Belasco regime sat In their shirt sleeves and talked far into the night. There were Louis Hartman, for thirty years the chief electrician, who had joined the Belasco forces about the time “Du Barry” and “Zazu” were produced; there was Matthew Purcell, for twenty-eight years a “props” man and Burk Symonds, the stage manager. m m m AND whatever reminiscences they recalled, they all freely admitted that for more years than they care to remember they had been “dominated” by “the governor”—and liked it! For Belasco brooked no interference. Each play in which he figured as author or producer was “his” show. He fought and loved and dominated. It was not a pose; rather it was an emotional habit. When “Mima,” one of his most recent productions, literally was burning up good money in production costs, the tale goes that Belasco was reminded of the expense, went Into a tantrum and cried out that he didn’t want to know what anything was costing. His job was to produce! The loss on this play put his Belasco theater into the list of mortgaged properties. nun HIS first theater in New York —his own prideful playhouse —was the Stuyvesant, and one after another stars were lifted to the Broadway heavens in this spot. There came, for instance, a good looking youngster who gave her name as Gladys Smith. She was looking for a stage job. “Great heavens, you want to go on the stage with a name like Smith,” erupted the great theater craftsman. He began to pry into her ancestry, and dug out an uncle by the name of Pickford.

"That’s it,” said Belasco, “from now on you are Mary Pickford.” You may have heard of the lady. Beginning with child parts, she made her great hit in "A Good Little Devil,” some years ago. Blanche Bates, one of his greatest stars, got her chance because Belasco was an old friend of her father, Mark Bates. He first brought her out in “Naughty Anthony.” Asa curtain-raiser, Belasco put on a one-act tragedy, “Mme. Butterfly.” The premier was in Washington. Avery high hat audience had been invited. Among those present was a certain Puccini, Italian composer, here fen a visit. After the performance Puccini rushed backstage and begged for the chance to turn the sketch into an opera. With results that need no mention. It was with “The Girl of the Golden West,” thjit the producer and Miss Bates combined in one of the most spectacular successes of their careers. But it was the stormy session with Leslie Carter that brought Frances Starr to the forefront. They came to the parting of the ways about twenty-five years ago. Mme. Carter had become one of the foremost actresses. Producer and star disagreed. She went a different way. And Miss Starr was given a chance in “Rose of the Rancho.” Just a low weeks before BelasFalse Teeth KLING Makes Eating a Joy KLING forms a comfort cushion, bolds plate so snug, it cannot rock or slip. co's emotional heart collapsed, the old feud was settled and out of Hollywood came the announcement that bygones were considered bygones. • • • r' was, however, his quarrel with David Warfield that attracted even greater attention. Warfield was an unknown comic In burlesque when Belasco spotted him and signed the great actor to the leading role in “The Auctioneer." “Years later when “The Grand Army Man,” “The Music Master” and “The Return of Peter Grimm” had made theatrical history, the two had been considered the Damon and Pythias of Broadway, parted in a stormy session over business matters. For years vitriol fairly flew, and then Warfield was stricken about a year ago. Belasco, fearing that his one-time friend might die, sent a bouquet of flowers. Both

of them, old men now, smiled and forgave. • mm MEANWHILE Henrietta Crossman had made her great hit in “Sweet Kitty Bellairs.” “The Darling of the Gods” had added her new glory to his almost infallible reputation. Jane Cowl had been “brought out.” Nancy O’Neil had come under his wing. Milton Sills, who became a great movie figure, had been In his cast. Lillian Gish had come practically out of nowhere, for a part in Mary Pickford’s play. And there were Leo Dietrichstein, Laura Hope Crews, Wallace Ed dinger, Lenore Ulric, Bruce Mcßae, Lionel Atwill, Ina Claire, Edmond Lowe, Charlotte Walker and a vast parade of others in his plays. Belasco knew how, and when, to pick them! He invented the use of paper strips, blown over a certain type of light, to present a realistic fire; he cut holes in the stage for indirect lighting; he grouped mobs and crowded stages with extras; he contrived off-stage noises. Volumes have been devoted to his ingenuity. He was the father of the mod-
