BANISH FEARS ! OF CHILDREN, IS DENTISTS' PLEA State Association Told of Ways to Deal With Youngsters. “Don't make the pulling of a tooth an event like a birthday. Make it as common-place as giving a child a slice of bread.” This warning was given Hoosier parents today when Dr. Mary Westfall. Indianapolis deptist, talked before the Indiana State Association of Dental Assistants, in the. Claypool. “Don’t harp to the child with such attempted soothing remarks of ‘Now this isn't going to hurt you,’ ” she said in explaining the proper methods of managing children brought to a dentist for work. Frown* on Playroom She said the ideal dentist must have a sense of humor in dealing with adolescent patients. “The dentist must not become a child and grow impatient with them. He must show affection and study the psychology of each individual youngster. Never promise them that the work to be done will not hurt them, if it will hurt,” she said. She frowns on making a playroom of the dental office, but suggests that childish fears of the whirring drill may be banished by an explanation of its workings prior to use. The meeting of dental assistants is held in conjunction with the sessions of the Indiana State Dental Association. Both organizations were to close their conventions tonight. Tooth Decay Described Dr. Edward H. Bruening of Omaha. Neb., told the dentists of investigations made by the research commission of the American Dental Association into tooth decay. “Whites must be more interested in producing better children or the yellow, brown and black races some day will be supreme,” he said. “Deficient diets can be the cause of decay in teeth,” he related after summarizing the results of feeding hogs and monkeys in dental infirmaries of the nation. Dr. E. Vernon Hahn of Indianapolis discussed “Head Neuralgias and Their Treatment - ’ at this morning’s session.
