FIND 386,272 AMERICANS LIVE FAR FROM U. S. Various Parts of Globe Draw Many to Settle Permanently. By United Prent WASHINGTON, May B.—Nearly a. third of a million Americans now make their homes in various parts of the globe, a state department census reveals. Consuls co-ordinated their efforts to enumerate former United States citizens, who have taken up a permanent residence in other lands. Their count—in some cases only an estimate—showed 336,272. This is about 6.000 lees than the total of another census taken several years ago. Canada contains more American citizens than any other country--218,717. One province alone—Alberta—has 98,030. Ontario ranks second with 47,889 and Manitoba third with 37,783. Life in France, it appears, is more attractive bo Americans than in any other country outside the western hemisphere. Nearly 26,000 former Americans have chosen France, as compared with 8,000 who chose Great Britain; 4,302, Germany; 5,459, Italy; 1,800, Russia, and 17,069, Portugal. State department officials were surprised to find many Americans living in small, queer corners of the

globe. For instance, there are 600 in Angola, Africa; ninty in Madagascar, an island off the east coast of Africa; 202 in Siam; 484 in the Straits settlements; 450 in Syria, and, more amazing than all, 16,949 in the Azores. If North America is excepted, there are more Americans in Europe—Bß,3o9—than any other continent. South America has 13,724; Asia has 20,286; Africa has 3,470, and Australasia has 1,956. Considering smaller geographic divisions, there are 20,798 Americans in the West Indies and Bermuda (including 8,725 natives of Porto Rico and the Virgin islands, who enjoy American citizenship, living in the Dominican republic), and 19,012 in Mexico and Central America. Consuls made no effort to tabulate the causes that have drawn so many Americans from their homes. It is assumed that many went abroad as business agents of American firms. A few are missionaries. Qthers originally were natives of other countries, were naturalized in the United States, and later returned to their birthplaces.
