‘MISSING LINK' SEARCH TURNS TO TURKESTAN Expedition Leaves Peiping for Unexplored Area in Asia. By United Press LONDON, May 7.—Man’s search for the "missing link” will be continued by an expedition now proceeding from Peiping to the valley of the Tarim, in eastern Turkestan. Professor G. Elliot Smith announced today. The expedition is headed by Father Teeilhard de Chardin and Dr. C. C. Young, a Chinese paleontologist, who were in the party which discovered the "Peking Man” In 1929. No systematic exploration ever has been made in the Tarim region, where the river flows for 1,500 miles across central Asia and disappears in the Lob-Nor lake. According to a popular theory, millions of years ago the climate there was highly favorable to mammalian life and became a breeding ground for animals now spread over the world. ‘ Events of great importance to scientific research may be expected shortly,” Smith said. "Some people suggest that the area where the cave containing the fossils of the Peking man was found is the home of the human family. "The objection to that theory is that the Peking man is only one of the three contemporaries, the other being the ‘apeman’ of Java, found in 1891, and the ‘Piltdown man,’ found in Sussex in 1912. "Early fossils of apes of the Miocene period were found in the Sivalik hills in India, and scentlsts engaged in excavating the Peking man have put forward the theory that the great factor which led to the evolution of man was the raising of the Himalayas at the beginning of the Miocene period.” Smith explained that the raising of the Himalayas cut off one group of these apes from India and north of these ranges they were subjected and forced to adapt themselves to new circumstances and climatic conditions or become eliminated. WHISKY MAKES DRINKER DRUNK. SCIENTISTS FIND
Seventy 'Martyrs' Undergo Test and Prove Liquor Has Wallop. BY OLE CAVLING Vnitert Vres* Staff Corresncnd'nt COPENHAGEN, May 7.—Whisky, taken in a considerable quantity, will make a man drunk, a committee of distinguished Danish scientists discovered after giving seventy willing “martyrs” a thorough test. In addition to this discovery, which many persons criticised as coming rather late, the investigators ascertained that all alcohol remains in the body only from four to six hours. The purpose of the inquiry was to find at just w’hat stage the ordinary drinker is affected by intoxicants. A total of 140 persons participated in the experiment. Half of them were motorists, aged 34, and the remainder 24-year-old students. They were divided into two main groups. One was given six cubic centimeters of alcohol per kilogram of the person’s own weight, while the other half got nothing. A regular restaurant size glass was used. Those who had not eaten for four hours prior to the test were given three drinks in 15 minutes and the scientists found they made 24.5 per cent more mistakes with figures and in writing tests, while other activities were retarded as much as 60 per cent. Even small doses of alcohol decreased activity, it was reported. How r ever, the experiments failed to decide the question of capacity. One student was thoroughly drunk 15 minutes after he had bent an elbow for the first time. Yet it took more than an hour for one motorist to be classed as intoxicated.
