State Pin Play Ends Local Keglers Fail* to Cop Titles but Share Prize Awards. By Time* Special SOUTH BEND, Ind., May 4.—At least sixty of the 200 Indianapolis bowlers who have competed in the Indiana state bowling tournament which closed here Sunday night will figure in the prize money. Twelve Indianapolis five-man squads are included in the first forty-eight teams, the prize winners. Distribution of prizes in the other events has not yet been announced. While the Indianapolis bowlers get a good share of the prize money, they failed to win championships in any division. The Waters Recreation team of South Bend retained its hold on first place with a total of 2,901. Indianapolis Tool outfit bowled Saturday night and landed in second place. _ Hare Chevrolet of Indianapolis placed eighth with 2,860. Neblur.g and Pinker of La Porte hold the doubles championship with 1,279, eleven pins better than the winning mark last year. Matthews and Nordhohlt were the only capital bowlers to land in the first ten singles standing, sixth and tenth respectively. Frank Farnan, veteran Ft. Wayne star, led the field with 708, a mark set Saturday afternoon in the face of a serious wound on one of his fingers that for a time threatened to put him out. U. S. betters Cop Initial Cup Event By United Press MEXICO CITY, May 4. The United States’ campaign to recapture the Davis Cup, emblematic of world tennis supremacy, has started auspiciously with a victory over Mexico. Sidney Wood and Frank Shields assured the United States of victory in their first zone match by defeating the Mexican doubles team of Ricardo Tapia and Manuel Llano Sunday, 6-3, 6-3, 6-4. Previously the United States had won two singles matches, Shields and Allison triumphing, and the victory Sunday automatically advanced that nation to the second round match against Canada at Montreal, May 21, 22 and 23.

The Indianapolis Tool Company team featured the local attempt for state championship honors on the final squad of the twenty-second annual meet at South Bena Saturday night, scoring a total of 2,962 to land in second place benind the r.ew champions, Waters Recreation of South Bend, who totalled 2,991. Eailey Realty with a count of 2.850 finished eleventh, and Wheeler's Lunch fourteen with 2,827. Frank Morris and Dan. Abbott had 627 and 610 for the Tool company, who still had a char.ce for the lead when Abbott, the last man to roll, took the driver. Needing two strikes in the tenth, Abbott was a trifle high and drew the 3-10 split. Frank (Red) Farnan won the singles event with a mark of 708. Members of the Selmeir Towel and Indianapolis Tool were on the final squad Sunday. South Bend was in line for a record championship. Hugh Harrop of .that city having a mark of 1.029 in the ail-events. Local players cashed in the doubles and singles with a Sock of near 1.200 and small 600 totals. Dick Nordhohlt had a 662 in the singles to roach the first ten. Jess Pritchett rolled 642. Larry Cobler was right in the doubles, and carried Don Johnson to a prize winning count. Charlie Daw was the winner of the Peterson individual classic, with a total of 1.840 which paid him a cash prize of 51.500 and a £SOO diamond medal. M. Weinstein of St. Louis was second w.th 1 813 which paid £6OO. while Billy Sixty oi Milwaukee copped third money. S4CO on 1.753. Jess Pritchett, the local entrant in this classic had a real chance to cop, but splits held his last game to a mere 140. The Indianapolis Tool Company team can well claim the local tournament championship. topping the field of local teams in the Central States. National and State meets. This club is composed of Fulton, Snyder. Mounts. Morris and Abbott. The Commercial League will hold its annual banquet at Horseshoe. Lodge on the Aliisor.ville road next Saturday afternoon and night. This loop claims the distinction of being the oldest league in the city, and its annual season-end banquet is the last word in bowling fetes. Norman Hamilton. secretary of the city association, is also secretary of this league, and will be la charge pi all arrangements. Practically all local bowlers who attended the state meet at South Bend paid a visit to Knute Rockne’s grave, every plaver catching the spirit that prevails in that city, which places Rock in the national hero class. The Hare Chevrolet 3.211 score topped the field during last week’s local league play. Marott’s and Fall City Lager also counted high with marks of 3.171 and 3.151. A. Hare’s 742 easily led the Individual field. Others to reach the 700 mark were: Cobler. 708; James. 706. and Shaw. 704. An all-star local women’s team has been organized for the season of 1931-32. which will include: McDaniels. Shea, Bunch. Meyer and Johns. Each one of these girls has proven here ability under all conditions. and expectation for a real championship club are high. KING IS RACE WINNER A record crowd witnessed the opening speed events at the improved Walnut Gardens track on Sunday, with Howard King, local pilot, flashing to victory in the fif-teen-mile feature in 15:162-5. Ray Meyers of Indianapolis was second and A1 Jones, Indianapolis, third. Meyers and Jones each won fivemile prelim events, as did Fred Beckett of Dayton, 0., and Frank Sweigart of Indianapolis. Two smashups occurred but no one was injured.

YOUTH KNOCKED SENSELESS BY HIT-BUN DRIVER Greenwood Boy Is Found on Madison Avenue; Sent to Hospital. Found unconscious in the 3600 block Madison avenue early today, Jason Bicknell, 20, Greenwood, was treated at city hosiptal, and on regaining consciousenss said he had been struck by an auto. He remembered nothing beyond the blow. Ellis Edmondson, Negro, 132 West Tenth street, was held by Albert Girton, 45, of Ben Davis, when he tried to flee after his car crashed into Girton’s auto at Fifteenth street and Capitol avenue Sunday night. Police found five gallons of alcohol in Edmondson’s car, they say. He is charged with blind tiger, transportation, drunken and reckless driving.. Also injured in week-end accidents were: August E.
