2,000 ATHLETES TO OPEN COMPETITION IN OHIO RELAYS
Trials on Bill Today Five Hoosier Schools Send Representatives to Carnival. By United Prut COLUMBUS, 0., May I.—More than 2,000 track and fleld athletes from sixteen states were gathered here today for the eighth annual running of the Ohio relays—last of the middle west's big relay carnivals o! the year. The main events of the two-day carnival are not to be run off until Saturday. Sixteen events for Ohio colleges, high schools and preparatory schools were scheduled for today. Western conference schools again are expected to dominate when the major events are competed Saturday. There were, however, representatives from nearly two score other collegiate institutions on hand to dispute the claims of the Big Ten trackmen. Fleet relay teams from Ohio State, Notre Dame, Michigan, Chicago, Indiana, Nebraska and Illinois are expected to provide a major share of excitement. Eddie Tolan of Michigan, Payton Glass of Oklahoma, Dcarmand Hutson of Denison, Jack Keller of Ohio State ar.d Lee Sentman of Illinois are a few of the outstanding performers here for the games. Big Jim Bausch of Kansas, Verne McDermott of Illinois, Tom Warne of Northwestern, Edward Gordon of lowa, Hugh Rhea of Nebraska, John Pottle of Michigan and Ray Utterback of Pittsburgh are the outstanding performers in the fleld events. Major John L. Griffith, commissioner of athletics in the middle western conference, is the official releree of the meet. At least five Hoosier schools—lndiana, Purdue, Notre Dame, Ball State and Butler—will be represented by star performers.

Babe Ruth Says
BY BABE RUTH NEW YORK, May I.—For several years I have tried doping out the pennant races. I figured as best I could the possibilities of each team and finished up by naming two clubs as pennant winners, at the same time predicting how the others should finish. This spring,. I decided to make a change and wait until the season was about a-month old before expressing my views on the outcome. In the years when I gave out these selections before the season opened I had to get all my dope from the training camps while I was working out with my own club. This year I thought it would be better to wait and see what the teams were able to do in the first month's play against other major league teams. Some Have Faded I am glad now that I waited. Some players who were tipped off as pretty good during the training season, and likely to stick all season, are already in the minors. We will know, too, in another month how many youngsters will be able to win their way into the regular lineup. Injuries may give a truer line on this or that team. About May 15, I will predict the finish of the clubs in each major league. I feel that this first month will definitely prove if the pitchers are helped by the raised seams in the ball, and if the ball will go as far as it would before they began the campaign to make it less lively. There are many other things on which I should have a better line soon. Case of Verges Take Johnny Vergez of the Giants. A moftth will tell whether he is to be the regular third baseman or if Lindstrom is coming back to third. Cleveland has anew outfielder in Joe Vosmik, and he may mean as much to the Indians as AveriU did in his first year in the outfield. Dome Bush seems to think that Appling, his new shortstop, will end his worries about this position, and you know that one player often makes a lot of difference. See what Joe Cronin meant to Washington last "year. If those youngsters with Bill Killefer’s Browns are as good as some of the critics believe it will make some difference in rating the second division clubs of the American League. You know the White Sox and Browns were close together last year. Then again if these youngsters fizzle the Red Sox may step out and grab a better place. Nobody knows what young players can or will do until the season is actually under way. TWIN BILL AT CINCY Reds and Pirates Will Meet in Two Games Sunday. ■ By Timet Special CINCINNATI, May I.—President Sidney Weil of the Cincy Reds announced today there will be a double-header at Reciland field Sunday with the Pittsburgh Pirates. The game of July 8 was moved up to supply the twin bill. BALL ENTERS FOUR By Timet Special MUNCIE. Ind., May I.—Four Ball State track men are entered in the Ohio relays at Columbus. The men left this afternoon for the meet with Coach McPhee. Jones, Dick, Graham and Johnson are entered in the quarter-mile and halfmile relays They will also compete in open events.
