In the Cotton Markets

(By Thomson & McKinnon) Liverpool and the continent sold cotton in New York this morning and opening prices were 10 points lower. New Orleans was a seller on balance. Small trade buying orders appeared on the decline, but w r ere insufficient to check the decline. At noon prices were about 20 points down since Wednesday. There was a small business doing in uptown textiles and prices were easier. Heavy rains fell west of the river and the map indicates the rains will be general in the east tomorrow. In local trade circles, sentiment is bearish, but their position is taken afresh every day and hardly goes further than in the making of daily fluctuations. The market itself is nervous, responding quickly to the influence of orders whether they are to buy or sell. CHICAGO High. Low. Close. In the Stock Market

<Bv Thomson & McKinnon) A wave of short covering struck the market full force today, giving us the best advance in stocks for some time. Early attempts to bring out further liquidation by what looked like professional drives against leading stocks were unsuccessful. This caused some hasty short covering, which quickly gained in momentum. Various reasons were given for the general retreat of the short interest. Possibly suggestions that the rediscount rate would be reduced and that brokers’ loans would disclose a large decrease had something to do with the change of heart. There was also a feeling that necessitous liquidation had been fairly well completed. It was the rail shares that gave the intimation that such was possible. The resistance which they displayed Wednesday and duringthe forepart of today's session excited considerable comment. The rails also had the help of some investment buying credited to reports that the difficulties in the eastern railraod merger plan had been fully ironed out. CROP NEWS IS STRONG FACTOR IN GRAIN MART Lack of Moisture Is Acute in Northern Wheat Regions. BY HAROLD E. RAINVILLE United Press Staff Correspondent CHICAGO, April 30.—Short covering in wheat and com at the close advanced those two grains sharply and while profit taking caused wheat to react, both were higher as the Board of Trade closed. The session had been highly unsettled with much liquidation of corn and oats early. Buying toward the last disclosed a lack of pressure and prices bounded upward, catching shorts napping. There was considerable selling of May wheat in small amounts by a large house during the day that the trade attributed to the government, as it usually acts for the government agencies. Oats held to a narrow range, paralleling wheat and corn, but were held back by rye’s weakness. Liverpool Is Steady At the close wheat was % to 1 cent higher with May U cent lower, corn was 1% to 1% cents higher and oats were Vs cent lower to % cent higher. Provisions were uneven, lard steady and meats sharply lower. Liverpool remained practically stationary throughout the afternoon waiting a report on the German action, closing *4 to % cent lower. Buenos Aires was off Vs, cent early. The forecast for rain in the Dakotas with some snow in parts of Canada, had little effect early as the moisture situation in those districts is acute. Cash prices were unchanged. Receipts were 104 cars. May Com Weakens While further liquidation of May corn weakened that delivery, the market as a whole maintained its strength on short covering until May was out of the way. Prices were off % cent at mid-session in a quiet trade. Cash prices were % to Vz cent lower. Receipts were 84 cars. Oats eased on their own inactivity early but some buying was met and prices were off % to % cent at midmorning. The good caSh sales were without much effect today. Cash prices were unchanged to Vs, cent lower. Receipts were 17 cars. Chicago Grain Table —April 30WHEAT— Prey. Open. High. Low. Close, close.
