MANY SERVICES PERFORMED IN HOMES BY ICE Preserving Food Only One of Many Services It Will Perform. Uses of ice, as pointed out by the Polar Ice and Fuel Company, 2000 Northwestern avenue, are so many in addition to the great job of preserving food that families can not well do without it. One does not think of all the ways in which it serves until these are I called to attention, for ice in addiI tion, is a decoration to the table, ; a help in time of illness or injury, an aid to cleanliness, and many other things. Ice, for instance: Freshens wilted vegetables and flowers. Garnishes table dishes and brightens the table. Cools drinks and adds to their attractiveness. Freezes salads and deserts quickly i and smoothly. Wrapped in cheesecloth, removes grease from soup. Melted, makes pie crusts short and light. Rubbed on the face, improves the complexion. Rubbed on bald spots, stimulates hair growth. Helps restrict large pores. Relieves a headache. Applied to inflamed tissues, relieves pain. Rubbed on chest and throat, relieves croup and sore throat. Melted, gives pure soft water for washing dainty things. Hardens chewing gum for removing from fabrics. Furnishes water for batteries at less cost than distilled. Reduces fevered conditions. Quickly cools rooms. And does many other household tasks. But, after all. the big job of ice is to preserve food. Because of its constant temperature and its ability to maintain the proper humidity balance it performs this task better than any other means yet discovered. Ice really is very inexpensive. A properly constructed refrigerator, well-iced, provides the best facilities for preserving and serving food. Polar cash and carry stations are located in almost every neighborhood and a large delivery department is maintained, serving many sections of the city. Thus it is convenient to everyone to secure Polar service. NEW CITY DIRECTORY DISTRIBUTED IN CITY R. S. Polk Company Includes Suburban Vicinity in Book. Speedway Official Tells of Tests Conducted at Daytona Beach. BY T. E. MYERS, Vice-President and General Manager of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. < Someone asked me recently what the spectator’s sensation was in watching Captain Malcolm Campbell, English speed king, break the world’s land speed record. I had just returned from Florida, where at Daytona Beach, I had acted as referee for the beach speed trials. “What did it sound like when the Campbell Bluebird went by the timing stand?” another friend asked. The last question embodies in its answer, the answer to the first. One would think, off hand, that the Bluebird motor, with a bore of 514 and a stroke of 5!4 inches, supercharged, would make such a deafening noise that its roar would be the outstanding impression on one’s mind. But such isn’t the case. Picture a nine-mile stretch of beach. At its edge to the east is the Atlantic. On the western edge is a succession of dunes, varying from two feet to perhaps ten feet high. The course over which the car is timed, is between the fourth and fifth milepost of a nine-mile stretch. At each mile there is a marker, numbered from zero to nine. Campbell started from the north end of the course, gathering speed slowly. As he reached Mile 4, his car crossed the timing wire and the impulse was recorded on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway timing machine, which is the only machine used at Daytona Beach. This machine, and the officials of the meet, are in a stand at Mile 5, the end of the measured mile. As the Bluebird crossed the wire at Mile 5, the impact again was transmitted to the timing apparatus and the exact time was printed on the tape. The time between the two mileposts is the time of the record trial. By aid of a Monroe calculating machine, this time is speedily translated into miles an hour. Immediately the Bluebird passed Mile 5. Captain Campbell decelerated gradually, so that by the time he reached Mile 9, he had his car well under control, traveling probably at twenty miles an hour, dropping down to ten, as he made a wide
turn, and without stopping for a tire change or a motor inspection, began immediately his return journey. Northward he came at ever-increas-ing speed. When he reached Mile 5 the impact was recorded, and again he crossed the w’ire at Mile 4. Bores Through Air This time was changed into miles an hour and the average of the two runs was computed, and given to Campbell a minute after he had reached the north end of the course. His average, as is well known, was 245.733 miles an hour for a mile. The old record was made by Major Sir Henry Seagrave, in March, 1929. 231.36 miles an hour in the Golden Arrow. Now, when Campbell reaches the timing stand his car is going “full out,” as he terms it. It is true there is the noise of the exhaust, but combatting that is the swish of a projectile with a frontal area of about twelve square feet and a length of twenty-five feet. Such a projectile is bound to make considerable noise in boring through the atmosphere, for it must literally make a hole through which it passes. The result is a mingling of the roar of a lion and the swish of the projectile, and frankly the swish is more pronounced than the roar. Low Humming Heard The car’s coming is heralded by a low humming with the car in the distance, increasing in volume until it causes the air to vibrate. Almost before one can realize it, the car grows from nothing to a large object, passes and as rapidly diminishes to nothing again, for it is covering a mile in less than 15 seconds! It was a great exhibition of car speed and of driver courage, as well, for the day was not clear and the beach was damp in spots. Campbell was all business when he arrived at Daytona Beach. Twelve days from arrival time, he had done the record and was packing up for his return to England. The whole affair was handled smoothly by the city and everything went off like clockwork. Like all meets of this sort, it was in the charge and under the sanction of the contest board of the American, Automobile Association, with Warren Baker of Jacksonville, Fla., in active charge of all details. Besides myself, Odis Porter of Indianapolis. was there as the timer. On the other side of the fence was Bill Sturm of Indianapolis, who acted as manager for Campbell and for the city. Diesel Test Is Made Indiana was further represented by C. L. Cummins of Columbus, Ind., wtih his Diesel motored racing car. Cummins set up a record of 100.75 miles an hour. This same Diesel will be in the 1931 Indianapolis race. Mrs. Myers and I drove our car down to Daytona Beach—the first

time we ever had gone by automobile. It is a much nicer trip, and in addition when one arrives in Florida, he finds he needs a car every time he moves, so that from a standpoint of economy and convenience, the car is a necessity. We were particularly impressed by road conditions on the trip southward and return. We never left the pavement for the 1,060 miles from Indianapolis to Daytona Beach, except for one temporary detour of six miles in Georgia. The road surface is good for any speed one may care to travel, the curves, except for the mountainous country, are uniformly wide and easy. The courtesy of the police in the cities through which we passed can't be passed unnoticed. In Chattanooga, it is not at all unusual for a motorcycle officer to draw up alongside the out-of-state motorist as he comes into town, ask where he wishes to go—and then lead him right to the spot. Atlanta police also went out of their way to accommodate us in finding parking space.
