When We Become Impatient For Success
Who are the men to whom our nation points with pride? Washington, Franklin, Jefferson, Lincoln, to name only a few. Their strength of character that placed them high upon the pedestal of our national regard was in their simple virtues. Washington we see as the incarnation of truth. Franklin as thrift and homely common sense and energy. Jefferson as a powerful proponent of the rights of man, and Abraham Lincoln as the embodiment of love and justice. All had one trait in common. They shared alike in their determined adherence to the right. They had moral principle. And we honor many other great men today, not so much for what they have contributed to the material advancement of our nation as for the moral advances they pioneered. When we become impatient for success, let us remember that Lincoln was counted a failure until his election as President. But he held steadfastly to his principle of emancipation from slavery. The colonies were ready to concede defeat while Washington wintered at Valley Forge. But he inspired his suffering companies by his supreme confidence in the ultimate victory of their principle of liberty.

No great task ever has been accomplished by following wavering standards of right and wrong. And no one is justified in rejecting principle for immediate gain. Until we, as a nation, come to realize that our welfare and progress depend upon our moral advancement, our crime waves and our crime bills will continue to increase. They cannot be stopped by punishment, only by moral training, for a low standard of morals is the cause of our vice and crime. We have placed too high a value upon material success. We have sought it at any cost. Now, we must strengthen our character. We must build up the moral principles. This is the one possession they need most to fit them for life. It can only be given in the home.
